Default Radiator Hose And Downpipe Clearance

How close it too close for downpipe to coolant hose clearance? This is my first turbo build, and it definitely has me spooked. Downpipe is wrapped in DEI titanium, and I wrapped the hose in heat shielding. The hose is rubber/metal ribbed. Thoughts?

I have had heater hose pretty close to a manifold, both wrapped, no problem-I would prob throw some wrap on the hose besides the heat shield-is that your 02 sen. at 6 o'clock, they say no further than 3/9 due to moisture.

What kind of wrap would you suggest?

Yeah it is. It’s a Huron T6 kit, the o2 is at 6, but on a angle, so I am hoping moisture collection won’t be a problem there. If it is, I will weld one in at another spot.

I ended up hard piping my rad hose for the same reasons.

just another way to skin a cat. Don’t really worry about it that way either lol. Ignore my garbage headed wrap job. I fixed it all I just don’t care enough to take photos these days.

Hard piping might be my next stop. I think I can do some trimming on how I fabbed my lower radiator mount, and squeeze another 1/4-3/8” of space there. My biggest concern is I may need to shorten the outlet on the radiator and re flare it somehow. Doing that I could trim the hose more and gain another 1/2”1”. In the picture below, I drew a red line about where it is inside of the hose.

Yeah I'd want to reclock that and/or hard pipe it.

How much of a minimum air gap should I be shooting for?

Why not just get a aluminum 90 and just weld the 90 on the end of the radiator outlet then hook the hose to that. Seems like it would be easier then re-engineering a whole hose or chancing a wrap fix.

Could also clearance the down pipe with a recess to clear the hose. Little heat and a hammer and you'd probably be good and barely hurt overall flow if at all depending on hp level.

That has crossed my mind as well. Anything I can do with minimum welding is first option right now though. I don’t trust my aluminum TIG work for leak free welds, and pulling the radiator will require removal of all hot piping and turbo.

Then I'd just remove that down pipe and modify it if I where you. The dent you would been to make to clear that hose and give you more room wouldn't be insane by any means.

I have a rubber line laying on my wrapped downpipe. Never had a issue. Plan on building some stainless pipes for it eventually though

Can you buy a 6-12" piece and clamp it in place wher eit passes by the turbo? Something like this? I thought the ID was 1.5? Look up 38mm alum bends on ebay. Tons of options.

My huron speed v3 ac kit has a similarly routed 4" bumper exit downpipe that I also thought was very close to the same radiator hose. I actually cut a small piece off of the hose on the radiator side which pulled it closer to the radiator, clocked it, and clamped it down. It gave me a bit more clearance but I really don't have much more - if any - more clearance than you do right now. I don't have or anticipate any issues.

Good to know. I pulled the downpipe last night, and plan to do some work tonight. Im going to shorten the outlet on the radiator, re flare the end, and cut the hose shorter. I tried the hose that Huron recommended first (installed picture below), and there was no way it would fit. I ended up with a different dayco hose (picture below) that has a very tight 90 to gain what clearance I currently have. Once I modify the outlet and shorten the hose more, I should end up with an inch or so air gap. Between the wrap on the downpipe and the reflective wrap on the hose, I think I will be good. If not, I’ll tweak the downpipe some.

I was gonna say, a monster dent in the DP isn't going to hurt performance any.

I like the playbook. Good luck!
