Default Turbo experts - Wastegate question for you.

Are there any gotchas venting the wastegate into the post turbo exhaust stream vs venting to the atmosphere?

I have a STS kit on the way and all the video's I have seen all you hear is the wastegate venting air.

I really want to quiet down the wastegate by plumbing the output into the exhaust stream but I was told this could adversley effect power output.

True or False?

I don't see how, but that is probably due to my lack of knowledge. Still coming up to speed.

TIA

It does disrupt the flow out the DP a little from the turbo...but how much i don't know.

Mine did that, then i just put a 1.5' tube on it pointing it underneath the car.... works great... can heardly hear it now. I know some people who have put small bullet style mufflers on them as well... whatever floats your boat.
I say just re-route it into the dp.

ahhh good idea.
I could build another silencer like I did for my ATI setup that I vented the bypass valve on.
thanks for triggering my memory. The silencer is cheap to build and can easily be taken on and off for testing.

would still like to hear more opinions if anybody else has got em.

thanks!

no, the wastegate.

watch the sts videos and when they get on it all you hear is the loud whoooshing of what I assumed to be the wastegate.

Damn that is a lil loud! I can see why you would want to muffle it. It sounds like a semi truck pulling away from a stop Can you make a tube run from the WG to the tail pipe on the car? It might quite it down a lil bit or take the edge off.

thats exactly what I want to do since I will be running my Supertrapp mufflers. Should silence it completely.

I am being told though it would somehow lower the output of the kit, thus my question.

i really dont know if it will kill your power or not. just make sure you have the largest tail pipe you can get.

in my truck i had that exact sound when i had stock exhaust on there, when i steped up to a performance muffler with a dump it actualy got quieter at WOT. the extreme air rushing sound went away.

I've got mine plumbed back into the DP. I don't think it will hurt performance wise.

Just plumb it in at least 18" from the turbo... it can create a little extra backpressure...and with turbos back pressure is evil. In this set up I doubt it will make a lick of difference. I guess in an ideal world the pipe diameter would increase 1/2 inch where the WG dumps back into the system.

If you plumb it back in smoothly at a gentle angle atleast 18" downstream of the turbo you're going to see minimal power losses. IMHO open wastegate just sounds like a big exhaust leak, because that's essentially what it is.

I had the wastegate vented to the atmosphere on my winter beater ( 94' s-10 w/ a 2.2l and 5 speed). I hated it, sounded like poop, my next winter beater 95' bagged Sonoma is getting a turbo too, but the wastegate will be put downstrem from the down pipe.
