Default Bigger intercooler results!

Just finished swapping out the stock ATI intercooler with a big griffin just like Pro stock Johns.

I did a log with the old intercooler 5 nights ago, results were--
DA-7671 feet (ouch!)
Ambient- 79 degrees
IAT- went from 91.4 to 149.0 0-100mph gain of 57.6 degrees
4000rpm(launch)- 22.32 lb/min
4800rpm(bottom of shift)- 35 lb/min
5800rpm(shift point)- 43 lb/min
Saw 10 psi

Tonight with new intercooler--
DA-7005 feet
Ambient-73 degrees
IAT- went from 77 to 104 0-100mph gain of 27 degrees
4000rpm-- 27.12 lb/min
4800rpm-- 42 lb/min
5800rpm-- 54 lb/min
Saw 11 psi

I gained (approx)
50 hp at launch
70 hp at the bottom of the shift
110 hp at the shift point
and 1psi

These numbers are what I used to see in the winter when it was 20 degrees outside and the DA was in the 3000 feet range!!!

Man, that ATI intercooler must be restrictive!!

I'd say this project was a HUGE success!

One weird thing, my air/fuel went from 11.7 to 1 to 10.5 to 1 with no tuning changes. Only change was the intercooler swap. Anyone have any idea on that one?

The more efficient you are the richer you will run. I have noticed this with a wideband. I would add timing and my A/F numbers would change to be richer. I'm am not 100% sure why as there are many things that can cause this, but I think running more efficiently you run richer.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I've heard better intercoolers make your VE go up. I wish I knew more on the subject though.

there is a six page post about VE in the PCM tuning section. There are some very intelligent guys in there posting about it too

Oh ya, I forgot in the last post VERY nice gains!

I'm still waiting on my griffin identical to yours, I hope to increase the timing and see a boost increase

It's weird, I only saw 1psi increase, but 11 lb/min in the upper rpm range. when I went from a 4" pulley to a 3.6" I saw only 6 lb/min but 3 psi.

I guess it shows what good a high flowing intercooler can really do.

Boost is just a term that we use very broadly. Too small of an intercooler limits how much timing you can run because of the hot inlet air temperatures.

That is a really nice gain. PSJ, what IAT"s do you see at the end of the 1/4 mile?

Nice! I am at about the same DA's(7600-8000ft) here in albuquerque but with hotter outside temps. I hope to see similar results from my FMIC. Today is the day to take it out logging. No rain, little humidity and a rather cool 92 deg's out.
Thanks for posting this up.

We had logging problems so I'm not sure I have the info, I will check today and post it up.

IMO many FI kits do not offer what I would call the best or ideal intercoolers... After all, these big FMICs are not what most folks are wanting. But when you start to look for advanced levels of performance you start to evaluate your parts and look at the weak links.

This is great info for those of us about to do this. Not only do we pick up airflow (PSI) we become richer and able to run more timing pickig up more power that way also. Im stoked mine should be here tomorrow.

Not to mention the supercharger has to work less not having to jam air through restrictive intercoolers. Less power lost through the crankshaft and less chance for belt slip!

If my intercooler restricted 11 lb/min of air at 54lb/min, I can't imagine what you guys that are already up around the MAF max with the twins are going to see!

you guys need to run a smc or alky controll alky kit ! will drop temps to air temp or below plus you can run more timing and more boost just like race gas. I run it on my 89 TTA with T-70 DBB run 26 psi with 26-30* of timing with the stock TTA/ grand national I/C PM for mor info
