Default K-member questions

Since several of you FI guys have them I thought I would ask you a few questions about K-members. I know that an aftermarket tubular K-member is lighter in weight, but what are some of the other advantages of it? Is it stronger than the stock one? Would it change anything versus the stock one (I mean will everything still bolt up to it and fit properly)?

Are there any disadvantages to the aftermarket K-member? I noticed on BMR's site they said "while we advertise it for street use, it may not be for everyone". What does that mean? Thanks guys.

It is not stronger than the stocker but it weighs 50#
less once you ditch the motor mounts as well.

My front end shakes more on rough pavement and is
not as tight as with the stock piece.

It does open up the undercar and exhaust channels
quite a bit in general. However there are a couple of
places (like right by the rear K-member mount bolts)
where the BMR encroaches more - like I could not
hang my random tech high flow cats because it
interfered, though the stockers are OK. I did not want
to compromise the piece so I ended up not using the
RT cats/Y I had bought.

I think if you added just a little more steel to the
BMR K-member in the right places it would improve
things a lot. Part of my plan.

I didn't see any differance in it, I also did upper and lower a-arms at the same time! However, on the drag strip I saw a big differance in weight transfer.

I like my K member as it allows a lot of header clearance etc. It did make the front end a little more stiff as far as feeling the bumps in the road but I also have tubular a arms with poly bushings. I built this k member myself trying to get header clearance and not sacrifice strength. The final unit weighs in 2lbs lighter than the stock one.

Much appreciated. I had a lot of time in this particular one. What year is your car? I'm sure I can do one it just would take some time and wouldn't be as cheap as the off the shelf ones.

I'm sure I can build one stronger than the ones I have seen. I put an ls1 pa k member in a car just the other weekend. Not much to them and they don't even do anything to remount the brake lines etc. I'll shoot you an email with an idea and we'll go from there.
