Default Iron or Aluminum Block

What is everyone's opinion on an iron block verses an aluminum block for turbo cars?

It depends on your goals. If you're going to stick around 600hp or less then aluminum would be fine. If you were going higher aluminum would still be fine but iron would be more consistent (wouldn't expand and contract as much) and would be a little sturdier. My engine builder (Erik Koenig at HPE) said he's even seen a HP increase by using the same parts from an aluminum block in an iron because the tolerances are consistent. If you going with FI you'd probably be better off with an iron block but hurry new ones are getting scarce!

I like the aluminum blocks but I personally don't see spending the money to run an aluminum block when you sink all the money into the shortblock and then ya never know when your block COULD split. But that can still be said with a iron block too. I just don't have the money to take the chances with nor the money to do a C5R block either.

Harlan.... I think you got lucky and got a block that was a faulty design and is solid maybe??

I plan on keeping my aluminum block for my turbo. I'm definitely forging the internals though. I may stay with the stock crank for a while though....

I beleive that it is doing it. I just can't say that I beleive the car will stay together for any length of time. I may be wrong but its a chance that I can't afford to take personally.

I saw Matt run like 10+ 8 second passes at NPR, between his TnT'ing and the event. Seemed like the aluminum block worked pretty well.

Matt's car has held together for over two years AFAIK. I have also seen a number of 700 rwhp stock block (forged bottom-end) LS1 Y-Bodies holding up for extended periods of time (none have broken).. Generally after the bottom-end is forged the only thing that breaks is driveline components.

Cheers,

Mark
