Great thread guys...
Jim... your experience/info gives me hope for my goal. Im installing a D1SC with FMIC, 6.0L heads with partiot duals, and plan on running 9-10psi with a SC cam as well.... hopefully knocking down really close to 600rwhp.
The only thing Im contimplating is to do rod bolts or not.... I know its beneficial but after reading about your experiences Im not sure if I should bother. I barely drive the car and I have a really good tuner.

My current graph @ 9 psi...
I think my next step will be to just do pistons and around 12 psi of boost.
This dyno graph was with 12 psi on my set up just to see what it would do...

Yep, Mike's a good friend of mine! Where are you at? Just got a motor lined out for her! Hope to be up and running within the next 2-3 months. Are you in SIFBYC? If not, you need to be, lol.

I'm in Mt.Carmel IL, like 2 miles from IN so I dont exactly qualify for SIFBYC. Takes me 10 minutes to get to Princeton so you can see I'm close. I talk to Mike once in awhile on messenger or cell, I just dont seem to get free time to meet up.

I'll bump this poll back up: I know we have quite a few new(er) STS users out there, and I'd like to see how many have built their setup on a stock bottom. Register your vote, all...

Vote cast. I think Zombie and 91redz are pushing the stock engine hardest with STS. 91redz is installing Nitrous and is also on stock valve springs. He must not be reving to high, not that you need to under boost. Both guys do the same basic thing, keep it pig rich. My thinking is the same I'm running 10.5-11AFR.

Rob Raymer had a stock '98 Firebird Formula that had 120,000 miles. He changed valve springs to the 918 and bolted on his T76 turbo kit. With good tuning, 50/50 mix of 93 and 104, and alky injection, he was able to put over 700whp and 800wtq. And from what he said he drove it daily and on long trip without having a single problem. He built a turbo motor for the car when ever the stock one gave out, but the stock motor held on. So he went ahead changed the motor. With the abused stocker out, he tore it down to inspect it. It really didn't show any signs of wear or damage. Just others have said, just keep the knock out.

I think if more of you guys went to stand alone engine management with WOT wideband O2 feedback you would see alot higher stock bottom numbers...
Even higher on cars FI cars with a thicker head gasket and a big chamber head swap..
Goofing on a tune is what breaks parts being run at or near their limits. The most capable tuning tools prevent that.

I could see the stock crank on a great tune go well over 1khp...
On a std stroke. The stock rods... ~800 hp... A smart tuner could beat that but it is a rule of thumb.. Like how we call stock rods about ~400 hp on mitsus (there are only 4 so still 100hp each) but 600 or so has been made by the pros on a stock block.
I'm just saying it may not be so much the bottom end but the limits of the person tweeking it.

Finally, someone who understands! I've argued this to death with people and just about everyone thinks i'm crazy/stupid. 600 rwhp isn't that much when you have 5.7 liters and 8 cyls to play with.

I'm running close to 500 rwhp on 81K and the motor doesn't burn a drop of oil. I don't beat on it really bad, some new mods coming soon will add about 60 more hp. We'll see how it holds up then.

Checking in a little late here.....but
my LS1 powered VX R8 Commodore complete with Gen-T1000 turbo kit from ls1turbo.com.au makes a reliable 610rwhp on a Dyno Dynamics (similar to a Mustang Dyno?) with the only internal mod being a set of Comp 918 valve springs.
and you can watch a video of the run here - http://doughy.theddrzone.com/t1000dyno.wmv
