I have done this for diesel boats many times but they have a lot more room to work with compared to a car.

A friend of mine did it in his '87 Ford Ranger pickup. Flipped the exhaust logs upside down, routed the exhaust to the front passenger's side, put a nice little turbo there, and made a nice little power gain (a little over 2 seconds in the quarter - he's beating Mustang GT's now ). $50 junkyard turbo from a late '80s Chrysler, $100 in tubing, and a bunch of misc parts...

Would he or I ever attempt it in an LS1 car? HELL NO!

Unless you are a very experienced welder with a lot of time on your hands, IMHO, the engine bay space to 'work' just doesn't justify developing one on your own. Start with pieces from http://www.turbotechnologyinc.com and go from there, IMO.

I would start with a tubular K-member, make your own headers, go with 2 turbos, and run the plumbing up top. It might be feasible to put the turbos on the top if you relocate some stuff like power steering, and ABS sensor, and ditch the EGR. Don't forget about the fuel system, and injectors, and tuning. I too would like to attempt this sometime in the future

Good luck!

Just get 125 people together and have them send me $1000 each as a deposit, and I'll make you guys a kit. I guarantee CARB legal, 6 month delivery, and OEM reliability.

for a mustang it would be fairly easy, (im actually starting such a project on a friends car next week, we finished up the fuel system last night) the LS1 creates special packaging issues with there being no room to work.

I have considered trying this, if i can get a hold of a incon manifold. as that is more than im willing to invest time into reinventing the wheel so to speak.

I wish you the best of luck, and anybody who does try this, PLEASE post lots of pics

I almost think that if you had a 4" cowl hood, or the 4" VFN ram air hood, you might be able to route the exhaust up over the valve covers and put a turbo where the battery is (relocate it), and where the front fuse box is(relocate it also).
But I think it will be REAL close.
