My advice would be to pull the head and take a look. I doubt that it is going to end up being a lifter problem though. Based on what you have found so far it sounds like rings at the least and piston at the worst.
Word of advice though, there are very very few people that have totally trouble-free FI setups. I know one person that just seemed to be blessed and everything he did made the car faster and he never had a problem...and he beat on the car, ended up selling it for a great price. The rest of us are doomed to have issues like this. Take it in stride and make it stronger for the next time.
