Default At what point would vertically mounted ATI intercoolers be done?

I'm considering mounting the twin ATI intercoolers behind the holes in the nose of my camaro (the 2 big holes in the grill area). At what power level will they just be overworked? I may just use them for a little while and see how they work.

I'd be very surprised if you could get them to fit in that area. I have my tranny cooler and oil cooler custom mounted in exactly the same area of my T/A behind the bottom corner front nose openings. There is barely enough room to mount those...

The idea is great - more direct head on airflow over the coolers - why I chose this method over the highly touted 'dope' style of aux. cooler mounting. In the 'dope' configuration the coolers are mounted in the same areas that the ATI IC's are mounted but without the xtra cooling aid of the little air dam extension.

There was a guy in california that mounted a pair of the ATI coolers where a normal FMIC would go a while back. Ran well in the 9s, those coolers arent a bad design they just have a mile of piping and the air dams arent as good as mounting them vertical. If you could fit them in there I would think you would be fine for 550-600rwhp or so even with the older smaller coolers.

the old smaller coolers are the 3.5" thick ones, correct? the "new ones" are 4.5 inches thick, correct?

i ask because i have a set of the 3.5" and i was gonna mock something up just for fun but i really wanted the 4.5" ones. think the 4.5" ones are that much better than the 3.5"?

The 4.5s would be better, how much better who knows, If I had the 3.5s I would try and see. I know the guy in cali had the 3.5s since the 4.5s didnt exist at the time

Bob at EPP thinks so - do a search - there was a thread or two with him talking about the improved performance with the 4.5's - along with a further improvement by using their custom 4" inlet tube...

The efficiency difference between the 3.5 and the 4.5 ATI intercoolers was documented in a recent issue of GMHTP.

well I think I'm gonna give this a try. If it sucks I can switch to the horizontal mount intercooler thats coming with my kit.

Do you have a link? or anything? I'd like to see what they wrote! I'd buy the magazine but I can't find it around where I live.

I think you can view issues online at their site. Might have to pay though...

dude i was so stoked until 2 laps down yesterday, i was so livid. fernando is the man, no doubt, HOWEVER i wanted to see schumacher be only 3pts away from him because it would of made for an AWESOME rest of the season, both teams and drivers would of been pushing as hard and as far as possible. oh well. haha.

back on topic....so is the debate mount verticle vs horiziantal? i dont see that helping all TO much, id think the 4.5 inch cores would be the way to go? too bad they are VERY expensive from ati and i cant get my hands on a used set. kinda pissed about that too.
