Default head gasket bummer

im pissed i can't race tonight, i've discovered i'm moving about a cup of coolant to the overflow during a 1 gear pull on the 'test track'

i checked the torque on the center head bolts, were tight, and i bought a new 20psi rad cap, same situation.

i have a fairly small relocated overflow and am not interested in overflowing or bursting it going down the track

i'll be sitting out tonight and replacing them with another set of stock ls2 gaskets tomorrow

i believe the tq to the studs was 80# should i stick with that or go more? stock arp replacement studs, 6.0 ls2 alum block.

i also have some copper gasket spray that i used before on cometic gaskets, think that is a good idea this time around?

any advice (other than turn it down)?

i'm running around on a set of 11.5" 17" et street slicks now and they hook up ok in 4th.

I believe I saw that arp torque specs achieve 75% of elastic bolt stretch. You can safely go more. I might try 85-90 ft-lbs.

The best way in your case (not an easy way) is to use an angle gauge to tighten your studs. You would have to do some math to get it all figured out though, unless arp can tell you.

You're going to push some coolant into the overflow, I wonder how much Kurt thinks is okay.

well it used to be 0 all this season up until a week ago, so at this point i think anything more than 0 is pretty significant considering i have raced the car every other friday night all season

i am afraid of it getting worse and at some point accidentally sucking some in and locking up the engine

I'm sure Kurt would be an advocate of 1/2 inch head studs at this point. Maybe you have one of those little burn channels....

We torque them to 85ft/lbs and it seems to work. Also back the car down 2 degree's of timing. That might just save you from pulling the heads anytime soon.

1/2" studs would be quite a bit of work at this juncture.

the timing is conservative, i will make it more conservative

think timing at peak tq is more suspect rather than peak hp?

this is my current map

http://www.fastrides.com/photos/mm/i.../original.aspx

so you guys running while coolant is being pushed aren't concerned it getting under your tires?

i could do a larger overflow but that sounds more like a band aid.

i also figure if coolant is not in the head cooling it, then i may melt/warp/crack something expensive.

At what point are larger head studs actually needed, or of any benefit ?

I torqued mine to 80lbft and mine has been 100% so far. It wouldnt see the abuse that your car sees though.

1/2" head studs are waste. The clamping force isn't the problem the clamping area is. I usually push about a quart every pass. Even more if I hot lap it. This is with an agressive tune. If I back the timing back a couple degrees it makes a big difference. It's just one of those things you deal with and check after every pass. We have pushed water since day 1 with every head/ gasket combo. Put your overflow in the back of the car.

well i cant be moving coolant like this for a street car so ill put the gaskets on and back the timing off even more and see how long it goes until it happens again.

yes or no on the copper gasket spray to the stock ls2 gaskets?
