I had the same problem when I received mine. Not sure "exactly" what they do but are needed to vent/filter...I called Vortech and had them send me several just to keep on hand if another one breaks...if the valve falls over it will hit these before anything else so you must becareful when standing them up.

just a vent/filter. Its a huge diaphram and it needs to vented on the opposite side of where the vacuum is. You can use it for a bit without it but you dont want junk getting in there, call vortech and they will send you some - they break pretty easy

I just called Vortech and they said they need the invoice to send me another one. I will have to ask the guy who sold me the unit to call them and have them send a replacment.

I have that port on My HKS one. On mine, if can be used as a Racing Bypass Valve can also be used as a safety "pop-off" valve if the second port is connected to a pressure source that does not see vacuum. For added flexibility and function.

The material is called 'sintered bronze', and it is basically a metal air filter. They fill a mold with small bronze ***** and heat it up until they are a little soft then apply pressure until they basically weld to each other. Based on the ball size and pressure, you get a metallic sponge that allows a certain amount of air through.

As you found out, they don't like to be hit...
