How many 1000 hp dreamers have had over 500 rwhp?
I've been observing FAR too many dyno-racing topics in this forum lately. So, I've created a little poll to see how legit some of you guys really are. I'm betting that the majority of guys wanting 750-1000 hp setups haven't even driven/owned a car that made over 500 rwhp.
I'm not talking about the drag car guys, mostly about the guys that want to build something with this power for the street, or even funnier, as their daily-driver. Some of them probably have no clue what a 500 rwhp street car feels like, much less 750+ rwhp. Anyone that has driven a 500 rwhp street car knows they are no joke, and have far more power than a street car can keep planted on the street. You can roast thru 3 gears on the street with a 500 rwhp car.
I'm curious about how many people throw out that 1000 hp figure just because it sounds cool, but don't realize what that might cost, or be like to drive on the street.

IMHO their is nothing wrong with 1000+hp on the street and can certainly be used with the right combination of parts.
If I understand your post though, I do agree that the people going from a stock car to 1000hp don't really know what their in for.

well i have had 500rwhp with my D1 on a stock bottom end. It was more than enough for the street....... BUT..... working on stuff is like an addiction, and with power so cheap these days its hard not to make way more than I will ever use .
Now i have forged the bottom end, turned the blower for all its worth, big front mount, and added a 100 shot cuz it was kicking around the shop.... its frozen hell up here in vermont right now but in the summer is should make close to a 1000 and the crank.
WHY? Dunno, its just not that hard to make power anymore..... now will someone teach me to run 9's with a M6?

I think the reason why most people in here haven't had a car with 500+ at the wheels is that most of them are coming from a H/C car that's not longer exciting enough. What's the next step? F/I, nitrous, or stroker...I came from that camp and chose F/I. There certainly are a lot of dreamer posts though...dreaming it up is fun, building it is a PIA.

my old motor was a forged 346ci. on the hose i was making 710HP/800 ftlbs of torque to the wheels
went 6.38 in the 1/8 mile with a 6speed.
this was a daily driven car and will still be very streetable w/ the new motor.
with the new motor i plan to be near the 1000HP mark
414ci, GT47-88, 8:1 and all the other blah blah
already have 80% of the fuel system built, bare block, headers on order from Ohio Forced Inductions and the turbo is sitting on my bedroom floor
over december and january i'll be assmebling the motor. after that, all i need to do is have a local guy who's built several custom turbo applications, make the crossover and DP.
i plan to have it done by march/april/may
oh and you need to add another option to your poll.

My car, with just over 500rwhp on street radials can be just silly to drive around. The only suspension mods are tubular lca's, adjustable torque arm, and QA1 shocks. I need to put on the lca relocation brackets soon. Very rarely do I put it to the floor in 1st or 2nd gear. 500rwhp is more than enough power for most people to hurt themselves with, although I still want more

Call me a dreamer... I have almost 400 rwhp now. I am putting a cam, and fuel system in this winter to get hopefully in the 420-430 range. Then I plan on a 150 dry shot. I am afraid this will be the limit of the stock short-block. I am hoping to hit 600 rwhp with nitrous... And at least a few times before I blow the engine. I am hoping this will confirm whether or not I really want a 600+ horse car on the street. The way I look at it... 600 HP in a minimum allowable horsepower level for these cars on the street... We don't Ferrari Enzo's walking all over us (do we?)... I am aware that controlling that kind of power is a major issue, which is why I've done the suspension/brake work first. If I like the power and want even more I plan on getting Speed Inc's new street-twin kit with a fully forged engine, this with supporting accesories looks good for the 1000 (flywheel) horsepower mark easily. Until the Speed Inc twin kit came out I was strongly considering a Procharger D1SC, all the other kits were too compromised in my books. I think that with kits coming out without packaging, ground clearance issues, or loosing AC, capable of 1000 HP, there will be a lot more 1000 HP street cars out and about. I mean, this whole hobby is about "keeping-up" with the Jonses... Back in the day, a stripped Model-T pushing out 40 HP was considered outrageous. With modern technology, sooner or later... 1000 HP may become the "norm"! The only thing I can see happening to stop the trend is some real legislation, something that says "no one needs more than XXX HP for the street...." (notice that's three XXX's NOT four...) I mean growing up I always wanted a muscle car, I thought that cars like that would never be built again. Now, with what has happened to cars, since basically, the LS1 came out... I don't want any muscle car, not at the price they're fetching anyway (I think so many people are clueless, especially around here, of what modern technology is capable of), and think one day everyone is going to catch on and realize this is the new golden age of hot-rodding. One thousand horsepower is the new "standard", or will be soon... Whether people need it or can handle it or not (why I see that legislation happening). It's too easy to do and money is cheap... Welcome to "1000 HP era"!

Tony, you know I drive my car all over Houston, at 850 rwhp
sometimes more depending on if I can get some 109 oct.
before I built this car, the fastest thing I had ridden in was a 500 RWHP SC'd TA. It left a hell of an impression on me in college LOL. I daily drove my car at 600 rwhp for a year, had no issues, dead realiable, lots of fun. 700 rwhp didn't affect it much still. but now...... 800+ got real interesting... jail time is just way to easy now.

hp wise, i have no idea, but on nitrous i ran 12.2 w/ a M6. now i've got the ability to put out close to 1000hp, but can keep it de-tuned to half that for driving on the street. then, when i hit the track, add some good fuel and switch boost settings and it's time to play. i think you're trying to figure out how many people are actually going to be able to control their cars once they're done. if that's the case, then you see why i went w/ a turbo. learn to drive it on low boost and pump gas, then add better fuel and start adding boost. i never had any plans to throw 20#'s of boost at it to see if i could control it. it's already a learning experience on low boost and shifting, can't wait to try it w/ more boost.

I think there are a certain number of people out there that want 1000 RWHP but don't realize exactly what that is to drive. Those same people also seem unrealistic as to what a setup like that should cost.

I know one thing. It cost me about $10g to get to 565rwhp. But I am at $26k and still rising fast trying to get to 900rwhp. Right now I can smoke the tires in 3rd at 70mph through a TH400 when it is cold out. Scares me sometimes though. BTW that 26k dousnt include my fuel system and rearend that I still need to buy. Have the engine but it still isnt installed. I drive this car 3 times a month usually.

For me, it's very difficult to harness 600 rwhp on the street, even with drag radials. 1st and 2nd gear take a lot of pedalling! Most of the excitement starts at 80mph and on the street, that means triple digit speeds in a heartbeat. On the other hand, it's hard denying the rush of being planted in your seat at 100+ mph. For me, I want more.

All steel '69 Camaro, flat top 377, BigShot plate 9" slick. 9.81 @ 138 @ 3355 lbs. Good enough to win KC's fastest street machine race (small tire) last decade. One of the few who actually drove the car to the race and left under my own power (this really surprised me that more didn't). It might not count because it had a carburetor.
Latest project makes about 550 at the wheels with a weenie small block under boost.
Still have the 'ole '69 that's getting a makeover. 357, Liberty TKO600 and an F2. Hopefully a touch over 500 with that. ; )
FWIW I understand completely Nine Ball. Sometimes it just bubbles over and you have to let it out.

I think his point is that its extremely expensive and complicated to build a 700+ rwhp car that can be truly daily driven. Ajustible boost setups like lingenfelter can do it but they are very pricey. Then when and if you build the 700+ whp car you cant use that much power on the street anyway.

Right now and for the last three years my daily driver is puttin down 415 rwhp. I have racked up 30K miles with that power level and it seems slow to me sometimes. In two months my car is going back the the shop to have the engine removed and the shortblock rebuilt with forged dished pistons and forged rods and arp bolts and my HI FLO street killer with a TC76MPS turbo and 1100 hp intercooler all installed with SD tuning and gauges and boost controller will be tuned for 91 octane and 650 rwhp. It will still be my main street transportation to and from work 90 miles three days a week. I do have a second vehicle if problems arise. Should be a good bump in power am lookin forward to it! No I am not a dreamer, but a power freak.

Atleast 1 person a week calls us and say's they want a 1k hp car. There car is ussually always stock to start with.We ask if they have $20-$35k to invest, then there is silence.
As for the cars we have built over 700rwhp the customer's are always scared when they get them back.I ussually take them for a ride first and drive hard to show them how unstable the car can be while spinning at 100mph.
Yes,there are many people on this board that daily drive high hp cars, then there are a ton of dreamers
No matter how powerfull the car is,you always want more.Even 900rwhp cars feel slow to me now on the street.I'll stay with my 300hp truck.
