Aftermarket heads worth it?
Aftermarket heads worth it? Ok i have a forged 348 with 9.5 comp. with lightly ported 6.0 heads, set up with GT47/88. i would like to get some etp's,afr's or LS1X's heads but i really dont know if the 2k-3k is worth it? i would like to be in the 700RWHP range to start and maybe get near 850 but i dont think i will ever need that much seeing the cars race weight is 2400lbs. just any and all thoughts would be helpful.

The general rule of thumb is that if you ever have to ask "is it worth it", it isn't. This forum is pretty much dedicated to people who do **** that "isn't worth it". Considering that people have run 9's and 8sec 1/4 times going FI with stock parts, no mods are ever "worth it", until you join the insane asylum that is HERE.

that is very true-
Nicely said, very addictive hobby thats for sure. I was going to go 8psi with a D1 on a stock block now its 408 with a turbo, etc. Never thought I'd be doing this and always looked at people who had setups like I am going to have and say thats crazy and a waste of money. Where does the madness stop

HAHAHA, its just too much fun though great point, my engine builder talked me out of upgrading from lightly ported 6.0 heads to AFR's. I am glad he did it saved me alot of money from power I wouldn't of used. Ya I will have to maybe run a psi or 2 more to see those gains but I won't be using that power on the street anyways

NJC corp... i went with the higher CR due to i will be running E85 and a full meth kit too. i wanted the base HP and torque to be there to help spool the turbo. and when the LSX block is all ready i will prob. go with at least 10-1 or 10.5-1

I've got my old 317's off my engine, and am going to take them to a local guy and have him look at them, and tell me if I should run them again but on a different engine. I went to aftermarket castings only because of the thicker deck, and the fact that when you port some stock castings you can easily break thru. My 317's went thru in 1-2 spots. My rule of thumb is you should go to aftermarket castings if you don't already have heads and know that you will go for 750-1000rwhp. But if you look around you might find ported 317's for like $700, but I would not run them over 750rwhp.
If you plan to do E85 and meth, I'd keep the compression at 9:1, especially if you are air to air. You should see how much heat this GT47-88 radiates after a pass. It melted by blowoff valve line.

Ya hear what you saying PSJ. but i am not running Fuel injection but its a blow thru alky setup. i will be running e85 on the street. and there will be no Intercooler as of now. I will be happy with 750rwhp cause i think that will get me into the 8.80's
If you can get a sweet deal on some used or low dollar 317's go for it, just don't spend big bux for them when you can just spend a bit more and get into TFS, AFR or ETP's.

9.5:1 is not too high I am running 9.8:1 and can go up to 20 lbs of boost with race gas. Driveability is best when the compression is 9.5 and up. If were talking street car.
I agree, mine has 8.6:1 compression and it is a dog to drive around. Feels like it has 150hp off boost.
