Default 4000# Pig: My Black Gal is PHAT! Let's talk weight reduction

Ok...

I weigh 190 lbs.
Car is Full dress (all accessories), AC, stock wheels, etc.
Iron Block
12-Bolt
BMR Torque Arm w/Driveshaft Loop
Relocation Brackets
Subframe Connectors
Bigger Radiator

You get the picture. This stuff is adding up.

What did YOU guys that are running mid-10's and 9's do to shed some weight?

I have some ideas and have been offered some, but it just don't add up to 500 lbs! Can I get some more opinions?

And I can't shoot for the K-Member replacements just yet. (I want that bad!)

BOY! What this car could do with 400 or 500 less lbs of weight!

Thanks!

pull the spare and jack, look at getting light weight carpeting (can't remember which vendor has it, but i've seen the link before), if you wanna really get extreme, pull the back seats, and maybe the speakers.

Someone said (on the "other board") that Colonel has a weight reduction write-up somewhere around here. Anyone know where? I've tried a search.

emmisions equipment , front bumper , rear bumper, skinnies, light weight battery, k-member would be nice but k-member with tubelar control arms is even better.

do you want it to be a stripper car or just lighter?

Remove speakers, seats, lightweight carpert (from Speed Inc.), relocate battery (my preference instead of lighweight battery). Solid motor mounts, remove parking brakes, remove windshield wiper bottle, hood pins, lighter coolant catch can, front bumper, on and on. My AC was almost 30 pounds, and its right off the nose. The entire HVAC assembly was another 35, but that is a more extreme mod.

I got the basics...I'm going to weigh my car as soon as I get it back to see what I'm at, I almost had enough $ to do K-member and A-arm while the car was in there, but I had to spend it on cooling, which to me is more important..

My first weight reduction thing is me losing 60lbs from the last time I was at the track, that will somewhat off set the iron block that I have now...

Sway Bar, I had the SLP one, weighed about 20lbs
My A/C is gone, that was 30lbs
AIR & EGR (11lbs) are gone...
Rear seats/Seat belts are gone, 34lbs
Jack/Spare, 37lbs
Slicks & Skinnies drop about 100 total off the car

I was considering ditching the bumper supports, but I drive my car all the time, so therefore I like to know they are there for a "safe" purpose

Mike,

Are you looking for permanent weight reduction, or just for the track?

If it's just for the track, lose the passenger seat too. In fact gut the damn interior, carpeting and all. Taking out plastic interior pieces helps, but it doesn't add up to much...unless you take them ALL out. That's kind of a pain though. Chances are, you'll break at least one plastic tab in the process...nobody likes to have to replace interior panels.

In addition to everything mentioned above:
Front end inner fender wells.
Headlight motors.
Hell, if you're not going to use your headlights at the track, take the lights out too (I think you just need running lights).
Replace your hood release with hood pins (Remove all associated hardware including wiring and hood release latch on lower dash).
Lightweight rotors (eradispeeds are a couple pounds lighter than stock).
Empty the glove compartment (who needs a damn owners manual at the track...that high-gloss paper is pretty heavy!)
Empty your pockets.

I'm running out of ideas.

I want to eliminate everything that would still allow it to be a street car. I would be willing to lose the A/C, for instance, but not lights... not even speakers (I'm a music buff).

I'm seeing a lot of good ideas.

With my old iron block, my car was 3550 raceweight with a 6 pt moly cage. I had !jack/spare, carpeting, back seat stuff, front bumper support, front swaybar, a/c, cruise control, front swaybar brackets... ADDED skinnies, rear drag rims, PA k member and BMR upper and lower control arms, dual exhaust with dumps.

With my new vortech YS trim, intercooler, and aluminum block the challenge for me will be to get the car under 3400 lbs, preferably 3300 raceweight. I'll be pulling the power steering, ABS module, and probably putting race seats in the car but it's really a race car at this point.

I know you said you want a tubular K member but not just yet, but I would save up and get that first or get it from ls1speed.com on their financing plan. I did that when they had a GP, Getting that k member was the best thing to get for weight reduction. The stock k member is frickin heavy.
Go with
K member(BMR has the motor mount stands built in)
Fiberglass hood/pin on less weight & looks cool
Ditch the A/C
Relocate the battery to the rear. That shaves considerable weight off the nose.
After installing the K member I was able to lift the front driver at the track(pic I posted a week or two back)
Have fun I am on the same road with the formula, she is too heavy and its easy to take weight off of her than off of my 215lb ***.

please don't get rid of the bumper supports or door bars. I know some folks are gonna roll their eyes but they maybe saved my life when i hit that wall. yeah I can handle my car like you guys but when clipped by another driver, I had no chance to do ANYTHING. Slow/safe is better than was fast and now dead. Your car is already fast...drop the weight you can that won't affect your safety. People will scream "pu$$y" but I have seen the light now..that was my first crash EVER and I am lucky the bars...seat belt and air bag did their job. Done preaching

you know, when i first started reading this, it was just another post. just kind of passed over it. but you know, he's right. for a strip only car, go for it, but for what, 20lbs? it isn't worth it on the street. you already got a 10second car. when i get the motor back in the car, the bumper supports will go back in. i think someone mentioned that HAL/QA1's weighed like 4lbs less at each corner, so that's another 16lbs instead of the bumper supports if you dont' already have HALS. Good Luck! And that weight reduction list is pretty helpful

I tend to agree with the saftey advice. But, it is also good to know those things for the guys that are going with a mostly drag-strip car. I want mine to be safe and streetable.
