Default 14.5:1 Compression single 106MM

14.5:1 Compression single 106MM on alcohol. Views, thoughts, Ideas?

Before anyone says it can not be done I have a friend running 13.5:1 compression and running twin 76's with carb blow through alcohol setup. Power comes on so crazy its unreal.

My thoughts on this is instant spool.

Cheaper cost. No Intercooler needed, No water Pump needed, No Radaitor needed. Cheaper fuel cost: Alcohol is 4-4.50 gal vs 7.00 gal race fuel.

Ci would be stock bore but with a filled block. IE All water passages filled with block cement.

Don't use the cheaper fuel argument....need 2x as much alky as gas

sounds like a wicked combo though

Well I now have a 1967 Camaro I got by default full race car with 12 point cage and all. I want to start building a collection of parts this year.

I know alot of people are going higher comperssion and alcohol so I wanted to give it a shot on a filled Iron block.

Can the Iron block be drilled for 1/2 studs?

I would keep the compression in the 11's,the alcohol fuuny car guys have found more power by lowering compression and raising boost, most guys run between 11.5 to 12-1 compression.14.5 comp +alcohol+boost=magneto and hope the plugs fire every time so she dont hydrolock

We have not had one problem yet with the 13.5:1 setup on his 347ci mustang. People gave him **** and said it was not going to work well it did. Look at people like Grant McCrary (outlaw 10.5) and others out there. Grant is high compression and twin 91's on alcohol.

So it does work.

what compression is Grant's?

I didnt say it wouldnt work, just that i thought you could probably get more power by lowering compression and adding more boost

With alcohol, sure you can. Alot of the Mustang guys have gone to this.

Regardless, I think you can go fast with low compression and the right setup. Wolfe has proven that.

In the end, it is the total combo. People are going fast both ways.

High compression and alchy is a very tough race combo. There are several bennefits to running high compression ratios with turbo on alcohol such as - the ability to use larger turbos on smaller displacement motors and actually spool them quickly, very efficient combustion, less detonation, no intercooler and the ability to make the power come on at an astounding rate compared to gas burners with lower compression. The pitfalls are that it is relatively new in that there are not that many out there who have the knowledge to help with tuning issues. Fuel consumption is two, sometimes three to one compared to gas. There is more maintenance to do such as paying particular attention to the fuel system when storing the vehicle. The fact that most are going to be blow through applications and offer the limited tuning abilities of a carb. There are some door-slammers out there right now that are flying with just that type of combo. Good luck with yours.

Jim C.

PS - Another area of interest is in camshaft technology with these combos. There is a heap of R&D to be done to see what types of profiles these types of combos like best. This stuff is sort of in its infancy in relation to turbocharging.

A guy I know locally here in the "Gump" has a Black Nova that runs a 498-c.i. BBC with two 91.5-mm turbos on his. His compression is right around 13.5:1. Car has run 4.50's in some of the local 10.5 (W) races and they are still tuning. One bad mother for sure.

That was done first hand Sat on the dyno. We had the car on the dyno with only 10lbs of boost and as soon as he hit it there was a major spike, dyno showed 2.13 secs and it was instant power hit 10lbs and at 6200rpm. Totally blowing the tires off and the car raising up 3-4 inches. They control that with timing I am told on the carb motors cause there is no way in hell you could get that too hook

I understand what you are saying. An MSD digital 7 box has a traction control feature that would probably be of some benefit when it is time to hit the track with your monster. It would also allow you to taylor the timing ramp to your liking. I put one on a 557-c.i. Ford with an F-2 blowthrough and was amazed at how detailed it allowed one to get.

14.5:1 is a little high considering the capability of a 106 mm turbo. I run a 15:1 static compression turbo motor and Methanol and do not feel comfortable running any more boost than what I'm currently at. Cranking compression is 265 psig. With out the room to retard my cam timing I limited myself to 10 psig springs in the waste gates which ended up giving me 1076 rwhp on the Dynojet. Biggest issues I had was firing the mixture above 5000 rpm. Only having an MSD7AL3 I had to back my plug gap down for the condition to go away. A 10 box or a magneto would be the way to go. On a postive note it's at 800 rwhp as soon as I stab it so it leaves the line pretty good for a turbo car.
It's really your dynamic compression ratio that will determine what you can get away with as far as boost goes. I'm currently bringing my static down to 13:1 which will enable me to max out my turbos.

I say do it. I have a buddy that used to run the summit sport compact series a few years ago, they used a ecotech motor(backed by GM) run 16.1 with 56lbs boost. he said it took 2 tenths of a second from idle to 46lbs(leaving boost). Its deff. hard on parts but makes stupid power. He actually is driving for steve schmidt now.

Even though it uses 2x as much I still think its cheaper, I think my dad paid around $200 for a barrel of methanol and he got a quote of $600+ for race gas.
