Default FI and sniffer test... I searched!

Good afternoon all,

Well I would like to go FI and I have lots of research to do in order to know exactly what route I want to go. I know I will be restricted because the car has to pass a sniffer test every two years. Now I would like to know is it even possible to go FI and having to pass a sniffer test. I read a few posts on here and there is a few that has done it. I would like to know how far can I go? Which kit is recommended along with what is necessary to go that route?

Any input is appreciated!

Simon

it all depends on your tune. if you run it super lean w/ high flow cats, you'll be fine. you may even want to have a whole separate tune just for inspections (its actually easier to just buy the pcm out of a junk car and have it tuned for inspections).

The cam is what you have to watch. The lopier the cam the higher the hydrocarbons.

Your cats need to be in real good shape, as in maybe they're only on the car when you have to test it. Designing an exhaust with a straight pipe that can be swapped out would be an idea, since you're still in the planning stages. Cats also need to be as hot as possible when the emissions are sampled.

The bigger problem with FI and smog testing is usually visual inspection... I dunno if that's part of your testing program up there or not. If it is, it's a heck of a lot easier to hide heads/cam/headers on a stroked/bored motor than it is to hide your FI power adder.

Or maybe consider going with the STS? I seem to remember that they were somewhat emissions legal?

Visual inspection is not really an issue since they don't really do one here. They simply sniffer test the car and if it passes your good to go. Anyways that's how it seems... Technically my catback is not legal and they never said anything.

I would like to know some real like experience with going FI and having to pass a sniffer test. How far can one go? What can be done and still be smog legal?

I almost passed. HC was too high. My injectors dump fuel when I let off the gas. I have to back this weekend, I think I got the injectors in line now and have it set to run lean.

When they had the IM240 test in Cincinnati I barely passed with a 214/224 cam and the cats installed. I was a certified E-check repair tech. FI itself won't really cause any issues, You will have to have cats + a mild cam.

We have the newer OBD2 test here. They plug into the OBD2 port and if the computer says the car is running like it should and you aren't throwing more than 2 codes you pass. Most inspection place don't bother with the visual. I haven't had cats in 3 years.

Same thing down here in El Paso. It was funnier than hell watching the person do the test inside the garage though. If she would have stayed any longer in there I probably would have had to perform CPR; the fumes were bad... When I passed she knew something was up.
