Default 5-10 PSI on a 408?

What's everybody doing to put a few PSI on larger than stock cube motors like a 408, etc.? I know FI isn't cheap, but I also don't want to spend more than necessary. I was thinking a used D1 would work, or a home built turbo setup (I have a buddy NUTZ who did this and went 9.13 and he could help). Just looking for options as I start the early stages.

There's quite a few people running a d-1 and making good power, so it deffinatly will work. Now is it the best combo of parts, probably not. You (myself included soon) will be running the blower hard to feed a 408 and alot of people say that it will run out of steem, which is true if your trying to make over 700rwhp. Not saying that you cant just easier to upgrade to an f1a.

How much do you want to spend? What is your motors compression?

Not sure how much to say I wanna spend honestly. Just feeling out the idea. Basically I was gonna grab new bigger headers and a FAST 92/92, and thought "Dang! That's $2k. For a little over $3k I can build a turbo setup." So that was what got me going.

Current compression is right around 11.0:1. BUT that said, I am fine with popping off these heads and putting on some 317's to drop compression if needed. Meaning I'd make money by selling my CNC'd heads.

I'd get forged pistons to drop the compression to 8.5 or 9-1 and add a set of good rod bolts and boost that thing, it'll haul ***.

I'm running a forged 408 already. -15cc dished pistons. ARP2000 bolts. The car in my sig. Went 10.4 full weight with a 150 shot. I gotta be able to hit 9's or it's not worth it. I was kinda thinking S88 setup. But basically it's like this:
I know everyone who pieces them together gets stuff cheaper than buying a kit, so I'm taking my time and seeing what pops up. Just seeing what everyone thinks.

You can't build a turbo kit for $3k.

Your not going to finish the car with 3k. Build the kit, yes. The turbo will cost you in the 2k range alone, unless your not wanting much power. Then you'll spend another 1k in fuel system. BOV, waste gate, controller, and all the bs little stuff. I probably have close to 6k in my home built kit with everything except fuel system.

I'm hearing people talk about an S88 for about $800. Is that not true?

Thanks again for all this help, man. I hate to bother my buddy who is willing to help me. I'd like to learn and do all I can on my own.

you can definitely built the kit yourself for $3k but it will take patience.assuming you can weld.
FMIC=$300
big turbo=$1500
Wastegate/BOV=$300
clamps/couplers=$100
piping=$500
use truck mani's or shortys and there ya go.

Do you want me to start listing all of the 100% necessary parts that you left out or no? I hate when people like you make members think you can build a COMPLETE turbo kit for $3k.

I figured it was pointless. It not like we've done it. A waste gate and Bov for 300, yeah that will last. OBX = fail. Although, their intercoolers are o.k. for the cheap.

I just don't want the guy to think he can have a fornt mount turbo car for 3k. Budget the 3k, tear the car all to hell, and then figure out you have a garage ornament for the next year until you can save enough money to finish. Or sell all the parts he's collected for 1/2 price and loose money. It adds up fast. You'll find you need stuff you didn't know existed.

turbo
filter set up
some sort of headers or mani
header flanges to pipe
turbo flange
exhaust flange
v band clamps
couplers for compressor, intercooler, and tb. a **** load more if you don't weld the charge piping
tbolt clamps
**** loads of different bends for the hot piping, dp, and charge piping
intercooler with some bracketry to mount
waste gate
pvc set up or lack of, catch can
oil feed and return plumbing with flange for turbo
injectors, driver if lowz
fuel pump(s)
fpr
**** loads of line and fittings for the fuel
fuel rails
map sensor
vaccum manifold
free flowing muffler and exhaust, unless you don't like to talk, then you can dump it under the kmember

optional: but recommended
boost controller
boost guage
wide band
meth injection
cut out for the exhaust

Don't forget every drive train peice that will fall to **** when you put the power to it. From rearend to engine ( at least valve springs if your not wanting much power). You'll also need a tuner to make it all work. I'm sure I'm forgetting 1/2 of whats needed, but you can get close with this.

fire chicken is right....i think i spent atleast 500 closer to 700 on my wastegate and bov (it;s been like 2 years since i bought it.) my hot side alone cost me 400 in stainless plus the gas, stainless wire wheels, stainless wire. the stainless flanges were 75+ for the 3 of them. man haha it was damn near 700 just to build the hot side. then the aluminum cold side cost 100 for the piping (go ebay) and if you want good reliable couplers that do not blow off or blow up they are spendy. need someone to tig the BOV on the cold side for ya.

Then there is the oil system with will cost you a 100-200+ for the fittings and lines if you go with AN.

fuel system can get crazy expensive.... i myself only spent around 700 for my injectors and 2 fuel pumps. and that is doing it cheap.

I bought my turbo used and it cost me 1000 after shipping. you will be hard to find a $1500 turbo that will support your HP needs.

that other guys list forgot tuning. you can factor in 500-100 or more for tuning to make it run right.

if you do not have them already....you will need guages. A/F, boost, maybe fuel pressure and oil pressure if you want. and guages are 50-100 a pop the wide band is 300ish.

a boost controler 50-skys the limit lol

intercooler can be had for 300 thats what i am using

you will spend another 100-400 on fans to cool your radiator you had to eather replace or move.

and on top off all that the car will nickle and dime you outa house and home lol!!! i think in the 2 weeks my buddies and i built the turbo kit i spent over $700 at the hardware store on who knows what!...

i went in trying to do it for under 4k i think i am close to 7k and climbing....

and sorry for the crappy spelling ... its a my keyboard =) yea thats it.

Yeah I have a boost-worthy driveline, and a few of the listed parts that I am already using on my setup.
