That's exactly what I think I'm going to try. Where did you hook it up? Over by the alt, where it came off? I'm wondering if that's what it was there for in the first place.

Best connection for grounding the block is attaching it to somewhere on the firewall. Be sure that there is no paint and its connected to bare metal.

^^^
You need to get that thing grounded before trying it fire the car anymore!

There should be a spot you can go to at the front frame rails. Just be sure it's bare metal. You can scuff it a little to get the job done.

Will do. Is it possible it hurt anything trying to start it without the ground?

I doubt it.

BTW, I grounded mine right from the aluminum head to the stud on the passenger fenderwell where the battery grounds to. I fail to see how anywhere else could be better. Also, more grounds never hurt anything.

You should have a stock grounding strap that goes from your block to the frame...

Wow, glad I only tried two quick times. I knew it didn't sound right as soon as I turned the key, I had to try one more time just to make sure though lol.

Alright, grounded the block and it does the same thing. Loud clicking and everything flashing. So I got under it and the starter is making contact for sure because it was still stuck against the flex plate so I turned the engine by hand a little and it released. So now I'm thinking the starter isn't getting enough power to turn it over or the starters bad. I never heard a dead battery make the clicking this loud but I checked the battery again anyway, it reads 12.03 volts. I thought that was ok but then I was thinking I remembered it should be more like 14 volts but I can't remember. What should the battery read? I'm thinking maybe I'll just get a quick charge on it and try again. I doubt it's the starter because it worked perfect last time I used it, but if it's not the battery, I'm not sure where to look next.

You're battery is junk. Get a charger on it at a minimum, or get a new battery.

Shim the starter? If the bendix isn't releasing it might need shimmed.

If it's clicking, and not turning over, it's a "current" issue, not voltage. I haven't read through all this thread however I assume you have good, clean, battery cable going to the starter and clean connections. If so, your battery is just not supplying enough current.

oh, don't forget.. current is BOTH SIDES. So you have to have that big ground strap too.

Did the car sit where it could have gotten water on it My bosses car was getting water into the cyl the starter would lock agenst the flywheel and brake the case on the starter I would pull the plugs and check for water also make sure the starters not broken . If your sure the starter is getting the right amount of porwer

Thanks again everyone trying to help. I'm sure the battery is good, it's pretty much new. It has been sitting for almost a year though so it could use a good charge I'm sure. Does anyone know what it should read with a volt meter?

Everything is stock for the battery and very clean. If I charge the battery, would that give it more current? Your throwing me off with the voltage vs current thing, lol.

Everything is pretty much new on the engine as been in my garage so it's not a water issue. I'm pretty sure the starters not broken, I just think it's not getting enough juice.

Fuel but not bad, I'm assuming your thinking burning? No burn smell or sparks if your thinking arch but I don't hold it very long, just long enough to know it's not working.

Just a little more info. I had my girl friend hold the volt meter on the terminals while I got in the car to try to start it. It was at 12.03, then when I put the key in the on position it automatically dropped down to 11.57. I thought that was odd. When I tried to start it, it started flashing to other numbers but she couldn't get a reading because I let go so fast. I'm not 100% it's the battery but I'm going to charge it to rule it out. It's wierd the way it clicks, very fast, very loud and just doesn't feel like how it is when you try to start a car with a dead battery. I hate the electrical side of this hobby
