That's what I thought but there was always oil in the pump because I was always replacing the used one. This one was brand new so it was dry. The o ring was installed on the pick-up tube.

Yeah, I knew someone was going to ask. I should have said it from the start, yes it had oil in the oil pan. The pick-up tube is new so I'm pretty sure it's not clogged.

I was told to fill the filter not the pump and fill the oil pressure sensor gallery as well as the oil pan of course. I have also heard on SBC's to fill the pump with vasoline but that is some old school stuff.

Is the rear oil plunger installed in the block? I ALMOST missed this when putting my engine together, luckily it already had one installed.

Yeah, the plunger is in.

I think it's just a priming issue. I don't like how the pick-up sit's in the pump so I'm going to add a bolt to the other side to make sure it is sealing well. I'm also going to fill the pump and try what Z06psi said. After researching a little, it seems no oil pressure is pretty common and it just takes a good seal and some oil in the system to get it to prime. This time around, I'll make sure I have oil pressure before I put it all back together.

WOW! I made a big discovery today. That .01 percent chance of the timing chain not being installed correctly came back and bit me in the ***. Even after looking at it again, it looked good, dot to dot. Well after checking out how to go about advancing the cam, I noticed the next number was 6, then 4, 2, 0! What the! The 0 I lined my dot up with is actually an 8 with the top o rubbed off. I intalled it with +8 advance! This is why it's best to take your time and double check things. I almost installed the new cam wrong again but decided to look everything over even though I could clearly see it was dot to dot. It's unlikely that this would happen, I have no idea how the top of the 8 got rubbed off but man am I glad I caught it this time around. That should fix most of my issues and the new 317s should fix the compression problem. I still would of had compression issues even if the cam was in correctly because I tested it without the pushrods in and still had leaking from the valves. At least this cam mistake helped me to find a couple other issues to fix while I redo everything. Should be just a matter of putting everything back together now

Sweet. Glad you found those little other things out before you actually got it fired up... So what did you end up doing about the pistons?

Wow that is crazy.... it sucks that you had to do all of the work to find that out. But like you said, you would have had issues anyways so it is better this way. Good luck and hope to hear it soon.

Lets try not to burn down the car this time

So are you still going with a smaller cam? I mean now that you know what caused the PTV issue..

I'm just going to smooth out the nicks and run them.

Lol, yeah I think the wiring is done so, cross my fingers and hopefully it starts the first crank once I got it back together. I'm glad I don't have to mess with the starter again, trouble shooting wiring sucks and fire is very bad

**** no! lol. I know a lot of people think I should but I wanted to do this with a big cam, now that I know it had nothing to do with the size of the cam, I'm using it. Anyone want to buy a nice, brand new, FI cam?

Thanks for all the suport guys. Hopefully now that I've got the problem figured out it should be smooth sailing getting it back together. Today I fixed the chain, oiled the pump, double checked the o-ring, got the cover back on, got the crank pulley back on and swapped all my valve train stuff over to the new heads. Next up is cleaning up the pistons and bolting on the new heads and yes, I'm going to clay the pistons just to be sure I have plenty of clearance.
