Yup heard about it a million times, either check valve or pump but it could have caused further damag like Tiago said wrecking the seals and needing a rebuild which isn't the biggest problem really. As long as it was caught right away and thats all thats wrong is the check or pump. If its the pump get the upgraded one, can't remember who makes it. You'll have to ask the buttmount boys!

To help the pumps live, get rid of that stupid resistor, it will cause the pump to fail faster. You should not control pump speed by limiting current to it.
My current pump is a Shurflo 8000-643-210. For the $100 I paid for it I don't care if I have to replace it once a year. I previously ran a Flowjet diaphram based pump (Shurflo is diapram based too) for 2 years until it died. My current pump has a higher temp handling capability so hopefully it will last longer, but if not, no biggie. This pump has been the best for me so far. Since installing it, it has never smoked and is the quietest and cheapest of all the previous pumps.
Make sure the wiring is really good, i've had intermittant smoking/oil problems in the past due to bad grounding on the pump. I've probably filled my turbo up with oil 10 times and never hurt it. It's pretty tough to damage the seal on the turbo from filling it with oil according to Jose forcedinductions.com.
The other trick is to have a good drain setup. Mine is 5/8's and I have a 90 degree fitting on the end of the turbo. The more vertical drop you can get the better, the further away the oil pools the less likely it is to backup into the turbo.

I had this problem, the fix is a restricter placed in oil flow line to the turbos. The oil pressure is too high and caused oil to bypass the oil seals of the turbos and come out the exhaust. This lesson cost me a couple turbos so its a no brainer to answer this one. I hope this helps.

When I called STS and told them I thought it was the check valve, they sent me a new one for free. Just a suggestion, cheap way to make a first check.
I have also heard of people requiring a restrictor, but only after raising the pressure in the engine.
AFA the pump, it is called a scavenge pump. JFGI, and you will find lots of choices.

have had the same same problem with my setup, found the BOV vaccume line was the fault it was 3/16 and didnt have enough vaccume to release the pressure fast enough .thus causing the turbos to spin backwards /AKA/surge causing the seals to go bad ,now my car smokes when its cold takes a few minute to warm up before it goes away,I will replace the turbos .suks having to clean the crap off the car every time i drive it!put a 3/8 line to the bov and it fixed the surge problems.also restrictors, and most people use a high volume oil pump,i dont reccomend one for a boosted appication.dont need it,my car has the SBE and cam in it with 15 psi.
