Default sts or rear mount have serious question.

My car has just started to make a noise out of the exhaust the tail pipe to be precice. it sounds like something is partially blocking it or something and it sounds like an exhaust leak on a lower scale but it is not leaking from anywhere. could my cats be coming apart and blocking it partially or has anyone experienced anything close to this?

Yeah you might want to take the filter off and spin the turbo by hand to make sure it is fine.

I had a something go through my turbo and it f***ed it up!

This is exactly why I would not run a cat ahead of the turbo. We had the same thing happen many years ago on a Ferrari 308 that had a rear mounted turbo. Part of the cat came apart and destroyed the turbo. Bob

When that happened what did it sound like? I don't have any metal on metal or grinding sound it just sounds almost like theres water in the tailpipe.

he's not really hating he just realizes the inherent issues with rear mounts becuase he has to fix all there idiosincrisies.

my question is if the cat comes apart that should be a pretty noticable sound and if there were pieces stuck in the turbo you would feel a difference but I don't. maybe it is just sucking air from somwhere?

well i put alot of work in that so called turbo and for someone to say we dont have a real turbo just makes me a little salty thats all. but you really need to get those cats off! that is the first thing to do even if its not the prob. or gut them. unless you have emmisions or such. when i took my cats off there were little pieces of metal or ceramic chunks that came out. i think they were on there last leg. but if that would have went through the turbo it might have caused a prob. and i didnt even know they were going bad. so no you might not hear at all. but sometimes you will hear rattling. you may want to get under there and hit the cat with your fist and see if you can here some rattling. you should not here anything at all inside there moving around.

the more i investigate the more i think it may be a leak in the exhaust somewhere. i am putting it in the air tonight to fix my bushings from bmr and will check it out.

Yeah check for leaks. If u have exhaust wrap it makes it harder, I know mine was wraped and when I changed y pipes out the old one had a huge crack where it cam together, but it was hidden and only heard under power. Thats probably why I could not get past 10psi with the boost controller turned all the way up.

A lot of exuast leaks are hard to find. I pressurize the intake and xhuast seperately with comressed air and search for leaks, often using water/soap. I have seen boost leak into the center section of a working turbo, which made it way through the oil drain to the crank case, pressurizing the crank case with boost. I assume the same is possible with exhuast too.

I use a leak down tester for pressure checks also.

Exhaust wrap makes it easy as $hit to find any leaks. The wrap will discolor a sooty black whereever a leak is. Found/fixed 4 when I was under the car one day.

Yep, a leak on top of the pipe would be a bit harder to detect.

BTW, there are a couple threads on the cons of double-wrapping. Mainly deals w/ moistue retention between the layers = bad for the exhaust pipes. I ran a single layer w/ a 1/2" overlap. Leaks seep past the single layer and give a soot film to the wrap, which is easy to spot.

Knappbunch, couple things you should check.
1. Pull the converters and see what they look like.
2. Pull the turbo (not hard....4 1/2" bolts I believe) and check the impeller blades for debis or damage.
3. If you have AIR delete plates on the exhaust manifolds.....check to make sure those aren't leaking. They will produce a tick that can be heard all over the darn car and from the tailpipe when not properly sealed.
