Default Fuel Pump costing around $1500??

I have a 1998 Firebird that's been sitting up for a while. I got it towed to the shop to have some work done on it and they said it needed a tune up, the fuel pump needed to be replaced and all the fluids in it needed to be replaced. The price they quoted was about $1500. Does that sound about right for doing that work? That sounds high to me. Also they didn't say anything about it needing a new catalytic converter but when i had it checked out about a year ago before because it was running hot, they told me i needed one. Does anyone know what that will run, or if i just get the converter cut out and a straight pipe put in, how much would that be? Ugh, this is gonna be a small fortune because it also needs wheels and tires and some cosmetic work as well.

Thanks in advance!

That's a major rip off brother, Get a second estimate somewhere else. You figure its about 5 hours of labor to drop the tank etc, so $600 ballpark for labor at a rate of 120/hr which is intermediate, then add in the cost of parts.

Here's the price list they gave me:

-Check No Start - $29.95
-Plugs - $47.82 @ $7.97 ea.
-Wires - $64.10
-Fuel Filter - $38.95
-Fuel Pump - $583.90
-Run Rite - $69.95
-Labor - $514.00
-SS - $24.90
-7.0% sales tax - $96.14

= $1,469.71

Then he said they would give me a 10% discount off the price since i've taken my other vehicle there before. Now I have the trouble of getting it towed elsewhere for a second estimate.

I also have to shop around for tires. Their price for tires is $468.18.

Buy a pump for $100 and have them install it.

1,500 is too much if you ask me. If you bring them parts will the do the labor?
NGK tr55's and msd wires $68

Fuel pump... If the sending unit is still working you don't have to replace the whole thing, just the pump.http://www.texas-speed.com/shop/item...d=225&catid=10
There's a $450 saving if you bring them the parts.

It might be too much but that's what GM charges. A few years ago when the labor rate was a little less it cost me within a few dollars south of $1400 at a Chevrolet dealer and the car was still under warranty. I argued in vain and they said because I ran it out of fuel it was my fault.

Labor and the overpriced pump are the big ticket items. Since then I have replaced the pump with a Racetronix kit.

IMO - pull the car out of the shop, bite the bullet for whatever charges they have so far and order and install a Racetronix. You can get a Racetronic plug and play kit for around $300.

Worst case scenario after including towing back to your garage you should be able to save yourself at least $500 to $600 dollars and have a kit that's up to the task for future mods up to 500 rwhp.

I installed the Racetronix kit myself and I'm no certified mechanic. I cut a hole in the back rather than dropping the tank. The tank looked as good as new inside with no contaminants or rust (1998) and why it's suggested you drop the tank and clean the inside of the tank out.

Don't install another stock pump when the Racetronic Kit by far the better way to go.

This guy may not be trying to rip you off. Are they a performance shop or just a regular mechanic? The reason that I ask is that most regular mechanics dont want to get involved in replacing stuff with aftermarket stuff because they are affraid that they will end up hitting a snag and having to eat a bunch of labor time. If you call a GM dealer and tell them that you need a new pump, they will quote you a retarded price because they sell you the entire basket with the pump, lines, and regulator already on there. Take it to a performance shop and have them put the Racetronix 255 setup in there. Should save you $200 after labor. NGK plugs are $1.50 each and easy to replace. Wires you can do yourself aswell and replacing the pump is pretty easy out the top if you can get your hands on an air nibbler to cut a trap door for access. If you are dropping the tank, I hear that can be a pain.
