How to take the ring off to install fuel pump?

As the title suggests, i'm having some trouble taking the ring off in order to get the fuel pump assembly out. Is there a trick to it or should i just use brute force? I've tried using a flat head and hammer to turn it but it won't budge. Any ideas?

Replied to your PM. Hammer and SD is the way to do it. Just be careful not to slip and put a hole in the tank.

we used channel locks for mine...do a little on each one, they'll eventually loosen up!

Make a tool to fit over it like a spanner socket, or make a spanner wrench angled a little for knuckle clearnace.

I just changed my fuel pump yesterday and I had the same problem and I just sprayed a little WD-40 and let it loosen it up and then used a hammer and screw driver and that did the trick.
