i guess this will give you an idea on where the sending unit is located...this is if you were standing at the rear of the car with the hatch open.
**BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO CUT THE GAS TANK**

the gas tank is very close to the body where youll be cutting.

Honestly I would drop the fuel tank just a little bit to alleviate the problems of cutting any lines. I have a 99 and the lines were run a little different than the picture above. I used a cutoff wheel on a dremel and just kept scoring the metal until I was through. I didn't drop the tank any and ended up just barely touching a fuel line. Learning experience for sure.

Here's a pic of mine. When cutting you'll feel the cut off wheel have less tension when your thru. Just don't go to deep. You have about a quarter inch of clearance. Looked at the indentations in the metal. It will give you a idea where to cut. I cut mine more than others up by the seat for easy access to fuel line disconnects

On the one 98 I've done it had connectors that were along the frontside of the tank. We cut the original hole and could not reach the connectors so we ended up making an L shaped cut sorta like what's posted above by stangtrader only we went a little further with the L. I'm sure you're cut will look similar when its all said and done.

What is the purpose of this exactly? I mean besides the obvious of not having to drop the gas tank to do a fuel pump.

I'm sorry I'm new to these vehicles. I wasn't sure if it was just a bitch to pull the tank or if it was a convenience to people who do not have access to a hoist.

Its really not bad with stands and a jack. I guess some people just don't like being on their backs. It's just preference.

I suppose you could. I think most people don't both as the carpet hides it.
