Angry 10 bolt went out

Well, the infamous 10 bolt just went out. Been making the tire noise type sound for a while, so I finally took it in to have it looked at. Axle bearings are toast, as is the pinion. They said that you could replace those parts, but that would be a very short term fix. They said they will put a new Jasper rear in it.

Is this still a weak 10 bolt? They said it would last about 100,000 miles. This sounds too good to be true if it is indeed another POS 10 bolt.

I have a 2000 formula A4, 2.73 final drive ratio, 109,000 odometer, and SLP lid. Everything else is bone stock. I do not and will not race the car, street or otherwise. It is just a DD.

Will the Jasper rear be OK?

If its anything to do with your posi or gears, i have an auburn posi with 2.73 gears on it for sale. No reason to replace the whole rear end.

Bump for update.

Just got the car back today with the new Jasper rear end. The shop claims to have already done all the break-in. As soon as I leave the shop, I have a very faint whine, similar to what my 1996 firebird 3.8 sounded like. The beat way I can describe it is like a jet engine starting up on acceleration and shutting down when off the throttle.

So, long story short, I took the car on an hour-long trip (never exceeded 65 mph), and the whine is worsening and pretty noticable by the tome I reach my destination.

The new rear is exactly the same spec as what was in there before, which was a 4-channel, 2.73 10-bolt.

I guess my question is, what is going on here, is this new rear toast, and what do I do now?

Upgrading to a 12-bolt or a 9-inch is completely out of the question. As much as I would like to, I just don't have the time, knowledge, or $$$ to put one of those things in right now.

Did the shop and/or Jasper mess something up here or am I at fault for taking the car out for that long???

The Jasper rear does have a 3yr, 100,000 mile warrantee on it.

HELP!!!

rear ends whine sometimes. I had one replaced when I was 18 years old by a very well recommended shop and it howled from 45-55mph afterwards. 100K later and ten years went by and its still got the same whine and holding up perfect.

I would take it back to them. The shop probably purchased the rear end as a whole unit to swap out to make life easier for them. Jasper Engines does make some quality parts but they can make mistakes as well.

I had to replace a front end in a 4wd drive truck and purchased the unit directly from jasper and told them to make sure it was to have the same gear ratio as the rear of the truck. The first time in 4wd the truck tried to rip itself apart from having different gears in the front and rear. So mistakes can happen.

Ok. Is it possible that I have done anything to aggravate it? I knew it wasn't a good idea to take the car on a trip that long.

What is the proper break-in procedure for those and how do I know that they followed it?

It sounds exactly like what I think a bad pinion bearing would sound like. It is just a jet engine type whine at all times, but particularly when coasting. Is it possible that the pinion nut has backed off a bit and that is what's causing the noise?

If I'm going to have a whine, I would at least like some cheese with it!

EDIT:

Do y'all think I can still drive it for the time being?

^^^all very good questions. I would suggest, since you dont know how to service a rear end, take it back to them and let them figure it out.

Take it back to them and ask them to ride with you so they hear what you are hearing.

9 in > 12 bolt, same money.

And if you don't have the money, and ARENT making big power, a proper rebuild is just fine.

Especially in an Auto.
