Default Gasket and RTV Silicone or RTV Silicone only?

What are you guys having the best luck with? I've got a small leak from my rear end housing. Gasket and RTV Silicone or RTV Silicone only?

I called Permatex and they recommended Ultra Grey.

honestly i have always used a gasket on the diff as the two surfaces are not machined to be a perfect match.. if you just use rtv it will oooze out more and look like ****.. clean the cover and diff well, put thin layer of rtv on each surface then let it sit for a few minutes put gasket on cover and tighten till snug, let sit for half hour then torque to spec... this lets the rtv set and not oooze out once torqued. i used a wire brush on my cordless drill to clean up the edges so it didnt look like ****. NEVER LEAKS... trust me

I used RTV the first time I put the Mac cover on, it
wept a bit and when I pulled the cover the RTV all
fell right out.

I went back to my old way of doing stuff, which is
Permatex copper glop gasket to cover and let the
gasket do its thing. Dry.

I use a gasket and a thin layer of "the right stuff" on both sides.
