Default new gears whine after going to the track!

hello,i need some advice from you guy's.i just got a set of 3.73 aem gears installed in my 2001 camaro by a shop that install's gears on performance cars all the time.also all bearings, races and axle's were changed.i put an easy 500 miles on the car, with no humming noise at all.well, iwent to the track tonight.i run m.t. drag radials.i ran a 12.09@112 with a 1.73 60 ft.2nd pass was a 12.20@113 with a 1.9 60 ft.after the 2nd pass i noticed a hum.my receipt from the shop say's (no warrenty, customer bought parts)i have stock manifolds on the car,so i noticed the whine right away.so,my question is,should i bring it back to the installer ,or am i stuck with new whining gears.i had 3.23 gears before running 12.30's and never had a problem at 60,000 miles with them humming. any advice is appreciated .i spent $1000.00 dollars getting the gears bought ,and installed.the car dropped 2 tenths, but now it whines and i,m not too happy.

I would take it back and have them check the pinion nut, but more than likely you are going to have to live with the noise. Take a look at the info at this link. http://shop.brutespeed.com/Brute-Spe...nformation.htm Bob

3.73 so you put 1000 in a 10 bolt? It could be the nut but
It may just be normal 10 bolt noise after beating. Weak

i will go to a different rear end if this one dosen't last.what's funny to me is before my camaro ,i had a 86 s-10.454 turbo 400,with the stock 10 bolt with a auburn posi unit with 26 splines running 11.50's.when i ran at the track i used mt 28x10.5 slicks, and never had a rear end failure.guess i was lucky.

I think the whine is the piniion acting like a tuning fork. With a lot of preload it is held so still that it doesnt have the ability to resinate noise but once the pinion bearings break in the pinion losens up just enough to start vibrating at certian speeds. It wouldnt hurt anything to torque the pinion nut down another 5-10 degrees to try and eliminate the noise, but that doesnt gaurentee it will eliminate the noise.

thanks alamantia for your suggestion.i brought it back to the installer and i have to bring it back monday.we test drove the car,and he heard it right away, and wants to go over everything.i was a little worried due to the receipt said( no warrenty, customer bought parts),meaning he can't warrenty the gears and other parts i supplied, but he for sure will warrenty the install.he did say they will check the pinion nut,and pull the cover.

Something moved around under hard load, Maybe a bearing race seated more etc and changed the set up. The inner pinion bearing is under ALOT of pressure when you are at WOT, so is the carrier bearing next to the ring gear, if the inner race wasn't completely seated and moved in a few thous it changes the setup on the gears and will whine.

Basicly the ring gear wants to move back and left and the pinion wants to move forward and right. You can't imagine the load forces and how the rear assembly deforms under heavy loads. You should install a girdle cover and have someone tack weld the axle tubes to the center housing if you want to go to the strip and use that 10bolt, cheap way of keeping your sanity.

Sounds like your installer knows what to look for. These 7.5 gm gear sets make noise easily, doesn't take much for them to whine. Even setup perfectly I've had them whine slightly @ 30mph and 55mph.

it's stories like these that make me glad i rebuilt my own rear. The best of luck with the whine, it's pretty typical of any abuse to the 10 bolt especially with aftermarket geatsets. Hopefully the shop will help you out

Default follow up

installer called me to go to their shop.the torsen center chunk was removed ,and taken apart, since the backlash, pinion nut, gear pattern was all perfect.the worm gears in the torsen had a little wear on them,so they suggested a eaton posi unit.i told them i wasn't putting any more money in a 7.5 rear end.they agreed.so he told me he has swapped worm gears around before ,and it helped sometimes.when they wre turning the tire looking for any problems, the rear would lock up a little from the wearing worm gears.he also recommed synthetic gear lube for the torsen.so they swapped up the worm gears ,and everything is smooth now,but the whine is still there a little.i have stock exhaust ,so i can here it some.so,since the pattern and everthing else was o.k. ,i took the car.guess i will have to live with a little whine.they only charged me 30.00 for the gear oil.

It sounds like they certainly did everything they could to help you out, and they probably lost money on it in the long run. If all you have is a little whine then I'd live with it, and hopefully it doesn't get any louder for you. Bob
