Default quick help/Question about replacing pinion bearing

I noticed a leak coming from my rearend and i noticed a little slack in the pinion.

I have never messed with a rear end before and I am not sure what is involved. I plan on changing it tomorrow.
If some one could give me a quick over view or point me in the direction of a "how to " thread It would be great

Thanks

James

As long as you dont have a bunch of noise you will probably be just fine to lower the driveshaft, remove the pinion nut and yoke, and replace the seal. When reinstalling yoke and pinion nut go ahead and tighten the nut until you have a little drag in the bearings again. If using an impact take it very slow just a couple bumps at the time.

Cool there is no noise!! I would have never know if I did not see a little oil on the cement

so what causes the slack?

what slack are you talking about? vertical? inward and outward movement? or the backlash? (twisting) of the yoke?

Vertical/side to side.. No in/out play might be some back lash play but not enough to be sure

I come from the world of DSM's but tired of the AWD grip, that is why I go tthe camaro...that and I think I got a good deal on the one I bought

I an't no 'spert, I have been into a few carriers,I think "Vertical/side to side" slack/movement may indecate pinion bearing, just a bad seal will not allow
"Vertical/side to side"

You are correct but if its not making any noise and he just wants a quick fix he can tighten up on the crush sleeve some and restore the bearing tolorances until they decide to go bad.

well got it fixed. I replaced the seal and the outer bearing because it had wear marks on it....It was a new bearing...guesse why it went out so fast?

The Idiot before me installed the wrong U-joint!!!! I did not notice it till I started putting it back together, he had the U-joint that was even on all 4 sides...but hte car needed the join that has the 2 long sides.. so there was all kinds of slop what he did to hide it was to press the 2 caps that were to small in and just held them in place with the straps...

I hate buying used cars, lol
