Default A4 + 28" tire. 3.73 or 4.10?

Another one those threads, A4 3.73's or 4.10's. I'm trying to decide which gear will best fit my car and my wants. I currently have a 3200 stall and will be doing a cam swap and will be shifting at 6400 rpm. I don't do a whole lot of hwy driving and it isn't my DD. I'm switching to a 325/45/17 M&H drag radial which is a 28" tire. I do go to the track quite a bit in the summer months and i'm wanting a gear that is going to make it nasty-er to say the least. Some concerns i have is running out of gear in the 1/4 if i go with a 4.10. Should i be OK with the 28" tire and raised shift points? I also here that the 3.73 is the best all around gear choice for a street/strip car without being to much. I've never rode in an A4 with anything different than a 3.23 so i don't know what to expect. I'm hoping some A4 guys will chime in with some helpful input.

Personally I think 3:73s is the way to go....the a4 responds perfect to this ratio, just enough to hook (sometimes). 4:10s I think would be too much gear, I don't possibly see how you could even reap the benefits with an a4. The m6 can handle the 4:10s better because of overdrive...I went 2:73s to 3:73s and it's the best move I've made thus far..
Really woke my *** up while driving, theirs no way I would even consider 4:10s.

I have a 98 A4 and went from a 2:73 to a 4:10 and love it and I run with a 26in tall tire and i drive it on the street. It would hit 4th just going across the line in the 1/4 and that was on a 100 shot and on Et's DR tires. It ripped out of the hole and it a blast on the street. I was running mid 13's at 105mph on motor and low 12's at 113-114 on the 100 shot and I was leaving at 1500 rpm. It runs about 2500 at 70.

Going into 4th (OD) is not what i want. Maybe with a 28" tire and the 6400 shift point i'll stay out of 4th.

and you only run 2500 at 70? With the 3.23's i'm at ~2200 at 70.

With a 28" tire go with the 4:10s IMO. Sure most people(including me)like 3:73s in their A4s but most people are running 26" tires and thats a big difference. The 4:10s will work good with the big tires.

At 70mph with 2:73s I was at 1900rmp....now with 3:73s at 55mph I run 1900 rpm.
Either way... 3:73s OR 4:10s.. just has to suit your dd/track needs..
I just go with the saying a4=3:73
m6=4:10
If my car was only a weekend straight up fun car I'd get 4:10s though..

My car is a wkend (or whenever my wife lets me) car. I currently have 3.73s. great for performance and driving. guess they are the best of Both worlds. I'm currently goin thru traps at 5900-6100 rpms in 3rd. Trans shifts at 6600. I will be installing a 12 bolt with 4.11s hopefully within the week. I too am worried about this setup. but I will probably switch to 28" as well. this too me is the best option..... will raise gear ratio slightly making it Slightly more streetable AND increase traction due to the taller sidewall. but that IMO. Being that the only long trip I make is only Once a year and only 100 miles, I'm not concerned with hwy driving.

are u still running 10 bolt?? Not so sure 4.11s will get along so well with a 10 bolt. Lol

i have 3.73 with my setup and i hit the track at least once a month and do everything else in it. im seriously thinking about going up to 4.10 bc i have a 28inch tall tire aslo but we only have a 1/8 mile track here and plus i dont think the 4.10 will be that bad

If you stick with 28" tire you should be fine, you'll put maximum stress on your 10bolt, other than that you should like them...

With you still being on the 10bolt, id stay far away from the 4.10, id probbaly just leave the 3.23 as they have more teeth and are thicker then the 4.10. Id change gears when your ready to change rears.

3.90s minimum. 4.10s if you do stay with the 28" tall tire.

3:73s or 4:10s
3:73s or 4:10s
3:73s or 4:10s
don't sleep.....you don't what any sleep until you've figured this out.

Put in my rear with 4.10's and 28" tall tires about a month ago and will never go back. Haven't been to the track yet but it's perfectly fine for cruising doing 65 I'm at 2400-2500. I used the richmond gear calculator and the 4.10s with 28" is nearly the same as 3.90s with 26" tires

I have the 4.10's with a 26". I switched from a manual trans. My Z is a head cam exhaust with a 4000 stall. I love it for around town but would not drive it to Lincoln. A short interstate drive is fine. I wanted this to be my around town toy that could go to the strip. It is not my dd. My opinion i love the 4.10's based on this. I would invite you to Omaha to take a ride but the rear is whineing loud and i need to get it fixed first and want to get my QA1's installed.

I'm thinking about doing 3.90's. I think that'll be a good choice so i can run a 26" and/or 28".

Someone said that the 4.10's will put maximum stress on the 10 bolt, but what about 3.90's?
