Default Thinking about 4.10s

What do you guys think about doing 4.10s on a cammed 6 spd camaro. It is my DD and I do alot of interstate driving so I cant kill my gas mileage, especially at $4+ a gallon. Im sure it will wake up the car but is it worth it in the stock rear or should I just suck it up and wait and do it in the long awaited/still waiting 9 inch?

I may have to get on the bandwagon then. We use the thin 7.5 inch gears correct. Im gonna buy a cheap set, I dont mind any whine I actually like it.

You will like the 4.10 but they will break EASY in the stock 10 bolt, the stock 10 bolt rears are JUNK and anyone who has had there car for anytime will tell you that, try them and if you like them get you a 9 inch, 12 bolt, s60 or what not with that or what ever gear you decide to run with the car. Good Luck with install and decision.

i have 4.10s and it's not that bad. obviously, acceleration is much better, but you will be rowing through the gears a lot more often. Gas mileage isnt that bad, and my 10 bolt hasnt broken yet. however, if you're dropping the clutch off the line with slicks everyday, youll probably break it.

I did a 5.7L combo that was turning slightly more RPM at cruise than what you're considering, and it did 27 MPG at 65 MPH. It was a very mild cam, too. The bigger the cam, the more cruise RPM it needs.

yeah my 224/230 now gets great mileage at around 1700 rpm so up to 2000 rpm which is what i did the math for shouldnt be too terrible. if all else fails I could just do the speed limit instead of doing ten over then Id get great mileage

Love my 4.10's w/ the M6 and torquey cam. I personally wouldn't run them if it was my DD. Just my opinion though. Gas mileage won't be effected to where you will notice it unless you keep the RPM's up 24/7 like I do so that it's in it's prime spot to lay the smack down at the touch of the throttle Be careful doing hard launches, that 10 bolt will only last so long. Also, go with GM brand gears, a nice quality bearing/seal kit too. No Chinese garbage. Good luck!

i had bought a cheap used whiney set once, the whine literately made me want to shoot myself, i deliberately broke my 10bolt (6000rpm clutch dump on slicks) just so i would not have to deal with it anymore

+1 Turk knows his gears. He steered and guided me towards some when I was in the market. I went with some gm made gears and they have held up great with no gear whine. Your speedo will be off a bit too. Roughly 10 mph too high.

a tuner can fix the speedo for like 20 bucks, so no biggie!

4.10s are sweet. If you keep it at 70 or so on the interstate, you'll still only be turning 1800rpms or so. Loads of fun around town, too. I went with GM gears and haven't had any issues yet, but I'm not overly hard on the car.

4.10's do hurt your fuel economy a little but it's really barely noticeable. how often you go WOT around town will better dictate your mpg you can always go with 3.73's if you're concerned with breaking the stock rear-end. it'll do a little less damage and you might pick up .5 mpg on average

3.42 to 3.73 isnt worth it to me. Im kinda thinkin go big or go home right now and 4.10 really isnt that big. I have 4.10s in my 92 but its really not applicable because its carbed cammed and has a 5 speed. Since I rarely go to the track im not really worried about breaking them nor will it ever have anything other that street tires on it. The only time im really concerned about is the highway mileage and I really dont see it going too far away. Im getting around 26 right now so 23 or better and Im good.

Definately do it. I have 4.10s in my 98 formula m6 DD and I love em, even on my stock 10 bolt. At 75 its around 2300 rpm or so and you'll be rowing through the gears a bit more when going from a stop but it's definately worth the upgrade

i put 4.10s in my trans am about a month ago and im glad i did. i had been on stock 3.42s for over a year and thought my car drove good with my TR230/224 cam. I was very skeptical about my car even needing them. i came across a good deal on craigslist and went ahead and swapped rears. All I can say is that i really should of put 4.10s a long time ago. The car drives much better. Drives like it lost alot of weight. This car is my daily driver. I run 315 nitto drags. i see a decent amount of highway everyday and still get good gas milage.

I don't know why so many people ask this when they could just search. With the m6 the 4.10's have little to no effect on mileage. I have 4.30 gears and I turn around 2000rpm@70mph on the freeway.

Oh and 3.73 gears suck for an m6 just leave the 3.42's in that case
