Default Aftermarket Aluminum vs. chromoly driveshaft?

I'm curious on the real weight difference between the two and who has had good and bad luck with either. Also which is smoother? I have a 9 inch going in and im going to change to one or the other.

The aluminum shafts are known to be smoother. The point of resonance is higher and usually not in the cruise rpm range. Every car is a bit different in this matter, but there's a reason the factory used aluminum in the 98-02 cars...

So is the weight difference and smoothness worth the extra money for the aluminum shaft?

We sell about 4 to 1 aluminum vs steel/chromemoly, and we sell a whole lot of driveshafts... the numbers tell the truth. Quite a bit of difference in weight as well. Less rotating weight=free horsepower

I walked out in the shop and weighed the PST drive shafts.

13 aluminum
20 Steel

There are many choices of yokes to choose from, knowing the proper one for your application is key. There is always the option for a chrome-moly yoke for the higher hp vehicles.

Performance, Aluminum has the advantage, better rate of twist before failure, lighter weight, doesn't transmit harmonics as easily as stl.

isn't it nice when you get the information you are seeking instead of just a link to what you sell

do alum shaft cause anymore driveline stress form being more ridged. What about tire and clutch slip?
For a m6 car on slicks, whats the diffrence in the launch was a alum, and a steel shaft?

Actually they give a little more than stl shafts, AL has a better rate of twist than stl and it doesn't stay stuck there as it will come back.

AL shafts won't absorb as much power as does stl, so when getting to speed i have had nothing but positive with lighter weight AL shafts over stl.

Now remember there is no real this shaft does 1200hp. . .

EVERYTHING changes, what will handle 1200hp in one car at 3" diameter may need 4" diameter in another.

The girl in texas last year almost died from a improperly specd shaft, when it broke at 170 mph and cut thru the car and her helmet, shoulder, ribs, legs arm. . . .
