8.8 build! Stock tubes, stock axles, Hiltsy mount I finished my 8.8 a couple of months ago and figured I'd post a few pics and info. I'm doing all of this from my android so bare with me.
I have a few thousand miles on it and lots of launching on slicks.
I broke the 10 bolt 3 times in 2 months with 400whp, a m6, and 27x11.5 quick time pros.
(I never "dumped" the clutch, just a quick release, and never left over 5k rpm is probably how it lasted as well as it did considering).
I read a few threads on here and decided building a 8.8 is my best option. It is definitely a budget build. I had around $350-400 into it when i completed it.
I already had the donor 10 bolt, and found an explorer rear for $150, with 4.10 posi. I got a 28 spline carrier from a buddy with new carbon clutches so that i could use my stock axles for a case of beer. On to some pics.
^Made the truing bar and discs at work
^Pulled the vent from the 10 bolt, drilled a hole in the 8.8 and put it there out of the way. Works perfect for filling, with the car on jackstands and the rear hanging down you can pull that vent and fill the rear, there is plenty of room.
All done and installed and tested.
I put my nitrous kit on the car and made it to the track after lots of testing and found the next week link, the stock axles. I broke a axle the next 2 trips to the track. I have since ordered 31spline axles from dutchman and put those in with the 31 spline carrier i got with the rear. I am in the middle of a t350 swap now so i haven't gotten to test those yet, but i am very confident I'm good to go. Hope you enjoy!!

Also-- I clocked the tubes using a magnetic base angle finder from lowe's for like $15.
I of course used nickle rods and map gas torch to pre heat and post heat when welding the steel to the ductile carrier, it has proved very strong so far.
Also used precision -355 conversion u joint and everything lined up and worked perfectly.
The rear bolted right up and was good to go.
Any questions just ask

One little sketch i found from when i did it with the measuements i used. (Don't judge me haha)
The measurements on the 8.8 are what i figured it all needed to be to come out stock width and all.

Nice work, I commend you! I personally don't want nothing Ford! But it ain't your fault GM stuck us with a glass jaw 7.5 pos rear! You fit the bill for your budget tho, and the 8.8 is tough enough, so I tip my hat!

Hey thanks alot for the kind words! And im with you, i would've never wanted anything ford on my car, but this seemed to be the most practical and cost effective solution.

I don't have it around to measure. But the rod just needs to be long enough to go through both carrier girdle/caps, and out one side of the axle tube a inch or so. Diameter doesn't really matter 1 1/4" is what mine is. The pucks need to machine fit on the rod and fit under the girdle caps with a little interference so when you tighten the caps it trues the rod. The puck that fits the end of the axle tube of course just needs to fit the tube tight on the inside. Hope i explained that well, I'm on my cell phone at work. Good luck

Nice job with the build! I'm getting ready to start doing the identical build as yours. I've got a few questions about the jig you made.
Are the pucks pieces you just machined out of a piece of aluminum? Do you know the OD measurements of them?
Also what did you use to make your sleeves for the F-Body tubes to fit in the Explorer rear?

The pucks i actually made from a hard plastic. My work is actually a plastic machine shop, it was easier to cut and readily available. I will try to get the sizes for you

That would be great. I work at Lowe's so I was thinking about picking up some 1 1/4" metal piping and using a hard wood like popular to make the pucks out of.
