Default Going to change gear oil

2000 SS has 56,xxx miles on it, I dont think the gear oil has ever been changed. I have a few questions: #1 how much oil? #2 what kind? #3 what brand? and do i do the oil change via the fill hole (suction pump) or would you reccommend taking the diff cover off and replacing the gasket and the cover?? its not a daily driver, only to car shows and a few times driven to work a month and is in winter storage.

Thanks.

1. 2qts
2. I use any brand thats on sale doesnt matter too much.
3. 75w-90 dino or synthetic if you have money

I always take the cover off just easier for me. And fwiw I dont remember the last time I used a gasket on a diff cover. I always just clean everything well and seal it up with permatex silicone.

Also you should add a bottle of the limited slip friction modifier. Technically its not needed unless you have the optional auburn diff but its only $7 and will help keep things quiet.

You should also not use synthetic if you have an Auburn.

I would go with synthetic. When you remove the cover you get a change to visually inspect the gears and look fo ant metal shavings, indication of excessive wear and such.

I run 75w-90 Royal purple with LSD additive, I always remove the the cover to inspect and look things over. I always get "the right stuff" gasket maker. this is my third time changing it in 2 different rearends. I also painted both of my housings in high temp semi gloss black paint just to help protect against rust and such. I use 2 quarts and use one of those pump bottle tops its a bit easier.

Damn thing is kind of a pain to fill but the rest is easy. I use 2 quarts mobil 1 diff fluid and GM additive. Scrape off the gasket once you have the cover off to prevent leaks. I used the permatex red gasket maker on the reinstall. X2 on the pump bottle. Gravity drain method is a bitch even on a lift.

Sorry to bring up and old thread but I'm not going to start a new one.

Anyways I bought the 4oz bottle of GM LSD additive. Went Napa and bought some Mobil 1 75w-90 fluid. Once I got home I realized it has the LSD fluid additive as well. Is this going to hurt if I put both bottles with the LSD additive plus the GM LSD additive in?

Thanks!

Well, it shouldn't hurt at all. But, I would try just the gear oil first, and if you notice anything weird then go back and add the bottle of GM fluid.

Depending on the formula, the clutches can act a little finicky from what I've heard. Some suggest dino non-additive gear oil with a bottle of GM, and some suggest syn gear oil only, some suggest syn with GM added. It's really a wash in my book, try one and if it gives you any trouble, try a different method. It seems to be hit or miss.

Well, when I opened it up for my LPW install, I found I have a Torsen unit so the LS additive is optional. So I'll just be using the gear oil with LS additive.
