Default Anybody ever drilled out a backing plate?

As a last resort before taking an axle in to a machine shop to get some wheel studs swapped out, I'm thinking of drilling an access hole in the backing plate. Looks like some tough ****, and I was wondering if anybody ever tried that successfully before?

Bump. Need to know this as well, looks like it could be done...there is a hole that would be perfect for it and I can't see how it would do anything to the integrity of it.

This is a pic of a conversion kit (supposedly), and it looks like where I'm thinking you can drill out is already done here.

You need to swap studs? Why take it to a machine shop? It's not hard

Because you can't get the studs out....that is why you need a hole drilled.

Hammer old stud out. Put new stud in through ABS hole. At least it's that easy on my 12 bolt. 10 bolt might have to pull the shaft out.

Yeah, taking the old studs out isn't the issue, but getting new ones in is. As mentioned, there is a hole that the ABS/TCS equipped cars backing plates have drilled out already, and you can get a ratchet in there to remove the studs. The only issue is trying to drill the backing plate out while attached to the axle. I've got new bearings and stuff on the way if I cant get it done myself and have to go to a shop, but I'd prefer not to do all that.

The hole you see there is for 4channel abs. But yea you can put a hole in them if you want. I cut quite a bit out of mine for weight reduction.

I drilled mine to fit on a 2nd gen (stagged shocks means staggered brakes - fun). The backing plates are iron. A drill press with a good bit should cut through them in no time at all.

Are your studs press in or screw in? My originals are press in (hammer out). My Wilwoods (front) are screw in, and Moser (back) are press-in.

Sweet Hio, looks like my grinder should cut right thru! Thank you very much for the assistance. I'll have to read through more of your weight reduction mods.

Well Hio's mod definitely helped me out. Got the studs swapped and the axle is back in the car now.
