Default 3.42's or 3.73's for street?

hey guys,
I'm going to do a gear install really soon and wanted to hear some opinions. I want to pick a gear for a street LS1 auto using street Goodyears(255's) I want to make a jump from 2.73's to either 3.42's or 3.73's. Is 3.73 too much gear for my tires?

I went from 3.23 to 3.73 and couldn't be happier. I do not have any more trouble launching on a street tire than I did before (I do have a 3800 stall). I do notice much better acceleration from a roll, though.

Yeah...hmmmm, I'm going to be using my stock torque converter. I hoping that the hypertech calibration for 3.73 gear will put things in check.

if you insist on staying with the stock converter (BIG mistake) than get 3.73s. Otherwise 3.42s are fine and give you lower highway rpms.

well i just put in 3.73's, and with stock converter my car short shifts. It SUX around town. Atleast with my driving style, i cant find a happy medium, either it bogs really bad around town, or im squealing the tires (stock) all over the place. I dont know what you have for exhaust but mine is way to loud now. I wish i had done 3.42s, at least for the way i drive my car. And mine whine, not real loud, but enough so that i know, and it bothers me. People say it was the install, the installer said all higher ratio gears do it. Anyways, my vote is 3.42's. Depends on your style of

Thaks nikon, I'm really staring to consider 3.42s. I don't drag and I'm rolling around town on stock size tires. All I want is more lowend power ( more muscle). I'm nearly happy with my performance now. My installer guy said he was "ify" about the 3.73s without drag tires.

I'm pretty sure anything is better than my 2.73s.

nikon:

one of the risks of a gear swap is that after correcting the speedo, the shift points may still seem to be a bit out of whack. I was glad when I got edit (previously had used a HPP3) because I was able to get my shifts where I wanted them. A really tuning device like the HP tuners or edit is a really nice thing to have with an A4.

I was faced with the same decision a few months back. Here in Aus. we use IRS so its a choice of stock 3.07 to 3.46 to 3.73 to 3.91 to 4.11. I do 20% freeway cruising and 80% city driving. I can nail it from a dead stop and wheelspin relatively easy. It pull like a **** when it kicks back from 20MPH into 1st and 40MPH into 2nd. No whine and a significant increase in the fun factor and SOTP feeling.

I feel its the best compromise between street and strip.

Note that if you plan on opening up your engine you will soon be making more horsepower that will run out of gear with the 3.73. 3.46 is a long term proposition and I ma very happy with them.

I have been around on this issue. I went from a 2.73 to 4.11 WOW! what a difference! Really woke the car up! At highway speeds it tacked 3100rpm at 70mph. I was driving about 70 mile a day so I changed to 3.42’s I like them allot and I dropped the rpms to 2600 at 70mph. But if I had to do it again I would go with the 3.73’s. Kind of the best of both worlds. Good Luck.

I have 17 x 11's ZR1 5 spoke with 315 on the back. When I ran that 13 sec 1/4 I was on bald Dunlap 8000's, could have been in the 12's easy.
