Default Rear end

so I've got a buddy who has an s10 extreme and he recently put a 5.3 in it. The problem is the truck has a limited slip rear end and he's wanting to install a positive traction rear end. What rear end could he use and if anyone has one for sale that would be helpful.

"Limited slip" and "positive traction" are two different names for the same thing. IIRC, S10s used the same 7.5" differential as the 3rd- and 4th gen F-bodies, but different axle tubes (leaf springs vs. coils). So looking for a S10 rear on an F-body site probably won't get much response (and won't get you an axle with any different features or more capabilities than the one your buddy already has). If you buddy is looking for a beefier rear to handle more power, he should be looking at venders who deal with complete rear axle assemblies for S10 applications.

GM also used a 'locker' in those vehicles, a terrible 'posi', could be what's being referred to. Also called a Gov-Lock. Putting an Auburn in there would be an upgrade.

Only 1 tires spins at at time. That's what I'm referring too. We definitely want both wheels spinning when he hits the gas. What options does he have? I'm not to familiar with the smaller trucks and What's interchangeable with them

That's an "open" rear (if it was always that way from new), or an LSD/Posi rear that is broken (if it used to spin both tires but now doesn't).

I thought the S10s came with a variation of the stronger 8.5" 10-bolt? This is a much better rear than what came in the 4th gen F-bodies, but it's not an interchangeable axle assembly between the two models. 8.5s can be built to be pretty much as strong as a 12-bolt. This is what I have in my '71, and it makes the 7.5" rear in my '98 look like a toothpick with a wad of chewing gum in the middle.

I had an old S10 Blazer with a 7.5 in it. It would probably be best if the OP go to an S10 forum with what year and model to find out.

I'm not sure man, he bought the truck as a shell and installed the 5.3 and now that it's running he has noticed that both tires do not spin. The tires will go back and forth. Sometimes 1 will spin and sometimes the other wheel will spin but never both at the same time

s10s have the same trash 7.5 rear. and it's gonna blow fast with a 5.3L LOL. he needs a custom fab axle or needs to make one himself. spending money on the 7.5 is going to be bad news.

There are definitely some S10s that came with 8.5" rears:

quick performance has a 9in rear for 2150 bucks with many upgrades to choose from more $ of coarse. but its way better than putting money in that 7.5. with that said the cheapest way (other than welding the spider gears) is going to be a lock right installed in that open carrier.

that looks to be a fairly simple upgrade just for the time being. I'll let him know and see if that's the route he wants to go. Thanks
