I don't know if this will help you but last year I put in a 4.10:1 ring and pinion.
My only mods are :SLP lid, smooth bellows,K&N filter, descreened MAF,home ported throttle body and Flowmaster exhaust. It has a six speed and stock tires. The car is so much more fun to drive (big time seat of the pants difference). The best part is I drove it on a 1,000 mile round trip to Missouri last October and averaged 27 mpg driving at an average speed of 75mph.I couldn't believe it myself. If you wanted to intall a 4.56:1 set-up you actually
could get away with that also. The only downside to all this is if you plan on racing the car alot, don't waste your money on the stock rear-end.Invest in a
12 bolt or 9 inch.Bottom line is if you only race it occasionally then go 4.10s or 4.56s and have alot of fun on the street. I hope this helps. Brian

If it's a daily driver I would say 4.10's I don't think I could deal with 4.56's everyday. One of my friends on here has 4.30's in his A/4 now a A/3 I think and I don't see how he does it. He drives it to the track and don't even worry about it. Don't think it's his DD but it was for a while.

I have 3.89s in my A4 and its not too bad. Depends on the size of the tires also. Is this on a stock 10 bolt??? If so any gear over stock is a bad idea. Just get 4.10s when you buy your new rear.
If your wanting to put them in your 10 bolt, youll find that your biggest problem will be finding a medium between breaking the tires loose and breaking the rear loose
