Rougly 20 passes, 200 miles on new Strange 12 bolt, time for oil change?
My new Strange rear end now has probably 20 passes on it and maybe 200 miles on it or less. Was just wondering if it was time to change the oil. I remember Strange telling me to change it after 1000 miles of normal driving. What do you think? Also, what gear oil do you recommend? Thanks.

I'd go ahead and change it... the 12 bolts all take dino fluid, not synth. Since you like to race, I'd probably go with Valvoline 85w140, which is what I use (2.5 quarts), plus two little bottles of GM additive. The thicker gear oil should help protect a little better with hard use like racing...

Damn Ben, I should just retire from LS1 Tech and ask all my questions to you. You have all my answers. I really appreciate it though on a serious note. What Strange told me was to run it for 50 miles, let it cool, repeat for 250 miles, then change oil in rear end after 1000 miles. It will be a long time before I hit 1000 miles. I figured since I had some passes on it, it would speed up the break in period, but that was just an assumption. Now when you say go get the factory stuff from a dealership, what are you referring to? Thanks for your help, youre the man.

Go to the parts department and ask for the GM Rear-End Lubricant. They might suggest another additive. If they do, go ahead and get it. If they don't suggest it, ask for it, the guy behind the counter should knwo what you're talking about. It'll help keep the gear quiet. I can't remember what the name of the additive is off the top of my head, but the parts guy should.

Did you start doing passes as soon as you got it? You're supposed to break it in, atleast 300 miles. Then after 1k, Strange recommends taking the dif cover off and cleaning out the housing and re-sealing the cover.
