them 4.30s just aren't enough gear....ordered a new set of "dump-truck" gears....
Now that I'm setting up a good N/A setup, and I run 28" tires, I figured that I'm hurting ETs by running my SMALL 4.30 gears. Did some calcs using a gear ratio/rpm calculator and have decided on a MANLY replacement gear:
4.71s
9" rears are cool, just about any possible gear ratio is available (4.56s weren't enough and 4.88s were too much but come to find out that 9"s have a nice in-between 4.71)
Will this be the steepest gear out there or what???

wouldn't 4.30's be about right with you're N2O setup though??? (or is that long since forgotten, and I'm behind in the times?)

bye bye N20...its off the car and on the auction block per say. I'm builing a 7000-7200 rpm N/A monster

I'd probably run a little more gear than my 4.33, but converter slippage on the top end limits me RPM wise.
You can probably get away with something like that 4.71 since you have virually zero slippage in your drivetrain. I almost went with a 4.56 when I redid my gears awhile back. Luckily I didn't, as the 4.33 is right on the edge now, and I run 28" slicks as well.

You must talk to Joe Kizzire. LOL! He was saying the same thing the other day. He's running 4.30's now, too, and he's wanting to step up w/ more.
4.71's ought to make for some FUN 60' action, and you'd better be ready to shift your *** off in the first 1/8th.

1/8, you mean 60'

Wouldn't it be easier to drop back down to 26" slicks? Those HUGE 28" slicks are probably slowing you down at your power level, 26" tires would be more than enough to handle the NA power.
Ragtop, we already shift to 2nd before the 60' mark

Actually 28s are making the car more consistant out of the hole. I'm looking to keep the increased contact patch between the tire and track I want to make a few more adjustments this year and shoot for low 1.5x to high 1.4s 60-foots...Don't think that'll happen on lil 26"s with baby sidewalls

Guess I'll have to prove you wrong hahaha. I was cutting 1.58-1.62 on 26" ET Streets, but now my 26" Hoosiers bow out because my rim isn't wide enough. I still cut 60' times in the same range though. I'm giving up over 3" of contact area on my slicks with these POS 8" wheels!
Still on a stock suspension except for LCAs.
Installed/Coming Soon:
LG Motorsports Torque Arm
LG Motorsports heim-joint/poly LCAs
HAL shocks, front and rear
15x10 wheels
I hope to get some 1.4X 60' times shortly, on the "little" 26" tires haha.

Tony,
What size tire are you running on yours? 26x11.5 ET street?
I am going with a 7 inch rim and 9 inch hoosier 26 inch slick. I am hoping I dont experience the same problem you are. Although Hoosier says that the 9 inch slick is fine on a 7 inch rim.
Cheers,
Chris

Hoosier should say that 7 is the minimum.
Hoosier also said that an 8 would be fine for a 10 but I found out that a 10 works far better at laying down the entire contact patch with my 29x10 slicks and the 28x10s before them. When it says a range of 8-10, for example, pick the larger.

Re: them 4.30s just aren't enough gear....ordered a new set of "dump-truck" gears....
Chris, I had the 26x10.5x15 ET Streets before and they fit perfectly on my 15x8 Draglites. Now I have Hoosier 26x10x15 slicks and they are bowing out in the middle and I'm not even contacting 1.5" on each side of the tire. That sucks! So, I'm basically running on 10-3 = 7" wide slicks right now.
Oh yeah, the ET Streets were 25.7" tall, these slicks are 26.4" tall, so I did lose some gearing too.

Tony...thats the fun of it....we all can do our own approach to see what works best.
My belief is that more gear/taller tire is better. Look at the really really fast cars (prostock, etc) thats they way they achieve traction.
Besides, I think it looks cool as hell with 28" meats out back As a matter of fact, I'm prolly going to get 28" Radial TAs for "street" tires

Tony, I'm thinking about the 26x10x15 Hoosiers this spring. Are you saying I'd be better off with a 10" rim over the 8??

I never had the Hoosier 26s but my 28s and my 29s love the 10" wheel. If it were me I'd go with a 10" wheel just for the extra growing room if need be. Now if you already have the 8s then by all means use them.

Run the same 26" slick on a 8" and 10" rim at low tire pressure. You know that squirrley feeling you get on the 8" rim at the top of the track as 12psi? It's gone on the 10" rim.
I will never run on anything less than a 10" rim again!
I think fireball is right - your MPH will not be as good, though it shouldn't be a drastic difference, but your ET should pick up greatley with the larger gear/slick combination, as should your consistency, esp. at marginal tracks.
On the street have fun though I have 4.56's now and it has given me a wheelspin on demand system, 1,2 or 3rd gear. it's kinda ridiculous - I need to get some nitto's on the 315's for sure now!
