Default Racing in 5th gear on slightly moded car?

My car traps at 107mph right now, I plan on adding 4.10s, so just from there I should run close to 110mph or so. Once I add LTs and TDs, I'd probably be over 112mph, which is where I have to shift into 5th with 4.10s.

How will the car behave in 5th gear? Will it still be pooling as hard? How many of you with 4.10s outthere that have to shift into 5th? Tell me about your experiences!

thanks

OP

Some raise their limiter to battle this problem. I just literally had my 4.10s put in this weekend and Yes 5th pulls like 4th used to. It's quite nice you won't regret 4.10's AMAZING!

Great. Keep me updated on how they perform man and if you go to the track let me know your results

I don't want to mess with vavletrain until I get a H/C and new springs to go with it.

I know that it will pull harder until 112mph for sure, but because 5th gear is weaker than 4th, I'm not sure if it would slow the car down, so being in 5th gear would kill those .3-.4 seconds that I shaved off in 1st 4 gears?

Anyone else guys?

but defeats the purpose of 4.10s. I might as well get 3.72s then...

A slightly taller tire (28" vs. 26") will have less effect on overall ratio than switching from a 4.10 to a 3.73. Only use the taller tire at the race track, leave your current tire for street fun.
Just a suggestion.

I just checked the gearing calculator and 4.10s with 28" tire will have exactly the same shift points as 3.73 with 26" tire. Not something I want to do. I'd rather keep the same tire height for both, racing and street.

Yeah, that what I was thinking. I just checked the gearing calculator and with a new cam and springs I could raise it up to 6500rpm or so. That would give me 121mph... still not enough if I'm going to spray 150shot. Maybe 100.

But does anyone ever shift into 5th while they are racing??? How will the car act?

You dont plan on racing with a 26" tall tire do you? You'll have a hell of a time hooking with it if you plan on spraying out of the hole.

I plan on using 26" drag radials. Want to keep the car as streetable as possible. Progressive controller could take care of the take off.

The only thing I see hindering your time is that split second it'll take to upshift into 5th, if you go that route. Now, if they only made 3.90s for a 7.5" 10-bolt.

There a couple guys on 4.56s that use 5th gear.

Don't bet against the need for tires. Depending upon your track conditions, the rear can get loose when spraying hard on the 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts.

^haha

Still debating. For those of you who have agressive cams, which gears do you use? I know that with 3.42 low end will suck ***. Would 3.73 be able to give it some low end power?

If your not willing to either raise the limiter or change tire sizes, I think the gears would hurt you more than help by making you go into 5th.

In my car I still have 3.42's with my shiftlight set at 6500. On a 275/40-17 if I hold 3rd gear out till the limiter I can cross the traps in 3rd, lol. But before the limiter change shifting at 6200 I was trapping ~119 with 3.42 and having major traction issues.

so far i havent taken this one to the track for 3 reasons.
#1- i dont want to explode my 10 bolt.
#2- im still working a bug out of the tranny.
#3- ive been to lazy to raise the revlimiter and shift light so i can go thru the traps in 4th gear.

but it has seen some action on the street and twice ive needed the extra mph past what 4th was giving me. but i dont have a cam and really dont plan on putting one in.

Cam is coming man, so I will be reving up to 6500-6600rpm.

And that's why I have this whole dilema. I need 4.10s with the cam to make up for the low end loss, but then I don't want to be limited to 125mph for my top speed.
