On an A4, I think it would be annoying...do 4.10's......

I can't really see 4.10's making that much of a difference in the 1/4. Am I wrong?

Absolutely. 4:10's are a huge jump over a 3:23 gear. 4:56's are WAAAY to much gear for an A4 unless you have a setup shifting at 7K or better. In most cases, even a 4:10 gear will be a little to much.

Post mods, or future mods for the car. People can help you a lot more with that info.

The car is a 98 SS A4 w/ zero mods. I just bought it and wanted to run it stock before I started modding. I finally got to run it Saturday at Silver Dollar. I ran 13.6's @ 102 all day, traction limited Mods on the way are nittos, lid, catback, cut-out, FLP's, TNT DRY, sub-frame conn., Random adj. torque arm, LCA's, and a gear (undecided). Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

Umm... did you say 4.56? You like racing in overdrive?

You'll be much better off with a good converter.

You are already traction limited and you want 4.56's? And of all your planned mods, I can't believe you don't want a converter. That is the most important mod you can do to an A4. Get a converter and you may not want gears.

Forget about all those other things except for maybe the Nittos and get a converter. All those other things won't equal the gain of just a converter. Click on the Yank banner and go to the selector page and see where your future mods are going to take you and get that converter

After reading your post again, it seems like you are new to the LS1 community. And it seems almost like you are coming from the Ford camp. Ford guys like to run 4.56's. That's not an LS1 thing. 4.10's is really pushing it. A converter in an A4 LS1 wakes the car up like you wouldn't believe. More so than running one on another type of car. Just like "chips" aren't something LS1 guys do, neither are 4.56's. Get a converter and 3.73's. And slicks

"Ford camp" ouch!!! that hurts!!!!
Actually the complete other side. Imports.
I have a 12 second Civic hatch also.
The whole reason I went against everything I knew and bought an A4 instead of the six speed was to get a converter and go from there. But after only 1000 I had to replace the tranny. So now I'm a little weary of this 4L60E, but I guess I need to suck it up and just get one.

4.10's are as steep as you could ever use with bolt ons and 3.90's are just about perfect. On my 11.44 at 119 internal stock run, I hit the rev limiter(set at 6500 rpm's) just at the finish line. Thats about 300 more rpm's than what I would consider optimal for a bolt on motor. The power falls off fast above 5600 rpm's. Run 3.73's and a yank tp4000-4400 and you will love it.

I have 4.10's and 26" tall ET Streets. I trapped like 6400-6500 rpms on Sunday. If I had 4.56's I would go thru at like 6900.

I would only do 4.56's if you were going to do a cam that makes you buzz the motor up to 7000.

Personally, a stall converter and 3.73's is as tall as I'd get on an A4... unless you did a cam setup that would let you do 7000 RPMs.

I have 3.73 and SY3500 Stall Converter. Such a stall will subtract a 1/2 second from your ET, if you hook it up with your Nittos.

I think 4.10s are better for most bolt on cars cause 99% of them will not trap 119mph like Y2K Blackbird (too bad they don't all go that fast)

so even if it was 110 mph with 4.10s the RPMs would be very acceptable.

A cam is in the near future, but not sure when or which one. I think 4.10's are what I am looking for. Thanks for all the replies.

Get a converter instead. You will lose .5 second off your 1/4 mile time and possible almost a whole second.

Sorry if this a dumb question, but in order to learn, I must ask. What the heck is a converter? And what does it do as far as performance?
