Default 4.10's normally whine?

Among other rear end mods ( LPW Cover with brace kit, welded axle tubes, Moser axles, SLP Auburn Posi,ARP Stud kit) I had 4.10's installed in my 10 bolt, and I read on some post about people with 4.10's, saying their rears whine, I'm hoping that it's due to a failure and not a normal " 4.10 " thing! Any 4.10 owners please respond with your 4.10 experiences!

Sure..... every gear set will make noise when set up incorrectly.

.....and no. Its not a 4.10 thing.

That's what I thought! Whining like ou said would come from inproperly set-up diff, or a failure during use! Thanks !

They are noisy, drone like at speeds of 75-80 MPH. Whine is not good but I won't say mine didn't make more noise when I was racing the first time when they were new. Gear oil thins out when it heats up.

I had no issues with 4.10's in my 10 bolt but I did sell the rear when I got a 12 bolt<---which just had an issue breaking a reluctor ring due to Moser NOT tightening all of the bolts on the damn posi.

My 4.10's sound like a tornado siren but were installed incorrectly, I have a bad axle bearing that has chewed up the axle and is leaking fluid all over the rotor . Properly setup gears will be quiet!

My 4.10's have a drone at high speeds. Goes away when you accelerate or decelerate. I have Strange gears though and some people complain they are louder than others.

My 4.10's make more noise than the 3.42's. They whine just a touch at cruise in 5th and 6th. It tends to be a normal 4.10 issue. It is still nothing compared to how my 3.42's sounded when my pinion bearing went bad.

Whine is not good. Mine drone in any OD gear between 55-65 mph... then it goes away. I was told it was because of the higher nickel content in the gears I chose.

If they are Richmond gears, they will whine regardless of if they are set up properly. It is because they have a higher nickel content compared to regular gears.

It has nothing to do with 'nickle' content. It has to do with the specific 'Rockwell' hardness of the gear set itself. Richmonds normally 'Rockwell' out at about 62.... which is a lot harder than other manufacturers. Knowing that, you should understand that it changes the metal's resonant frequency..... hence, the biggest reason that Richmond gear sets have been known to make noise in a street application.

65 or in 6th, other than that they were quiet before I started breaking teeth off.

My 4.10s in the Strange 12 bolt are a bit louder than 3.73s in OD I had in my 10 bolt at very low RPM...they are set up very carefully. I fall on the side that this is normal...i'd call this minimal
