Default TCS/ASR Problem. This One Is Unique.. Help If You Can.

Okay I just picked up a 1998 Camaro Z28... has a 2001 WS6 LS1, and a 6 Speed Manual. The car itself runs great, shifts great, feels great. But since I just got this car less than 24 hours ago I'd like to look into the few problems I have found.

Problem 1. ASR Completely Inoperable.
When I get in the car by default the ASR is turned on. If I try to accelerate with this option on, the car almost immediatley says "Low Trac" and the peddle stiffens. The car will not operate with ASR on. If I use the switch to turn off the option, the car runs great minus the traction control, and obviously there is wheel spin. I had the car up and couldnt see anything unhooked or damaged. The differential cover has been off, as the fresh gasket sealer is apparent.

Problem 2. ABS Inop / Brake Lights On.
The brakes feel decent, I notice that the drivers side rear rotor is wearing uneven, there is only wear showing on the outter 3/4-1 inch portion of the rotor. The lights turn on about 2 mins into the drive, or after a decent amount of pressure is applied to the brakes. Like I said I just got the car so I am still learning, but I learn quick.

Id like to address these problems asap and get them fixed and hopefully spare the cost and time of taking it to a dealership. If anyone has any suggestions please help.

TCS/ASR is joined at the hip to the ABS system.
It needs the ABS wheel sensors to be working right.
The rear end is a weak link on these cars, and some
shade tree clown might have swapped on a 3-channel
for a 4-channel rear (4-channel, with the ABS
choppers on the axles instead of the in pumpkin, is
necessary for ABS to work and ABS is necessary for
TCS/ASR). If you see abnormal stuff on a brake rotor
then maybe there is also something out of position on
that wheel's ABS sensor, bent mounting or whatever.

First off I'd run a finger down the ABS harness' branches
and make sure everything's there, maybe pull & reseat
connectors, and see that the sensors are uniformly
close to the reluctors (and that you in fact have two).
Could even be that the differential was opened to
replace an axle and the organ donor happened to be
a non-TCS car.

Do you have 3in wheel studs?

If the rear cover has been off, I would check the condition of the sensors. Alot of guys do not understand that you must loosen or remove the ABS/TCS sensors before trying to get the c-clips out.

Allright guys we are gonna take a closer look at it. At first glance not knowing the car too well there looks like there is no abs on the rear. There is the harness however. How can i distinguish 3/4 channel abs. 3 channel has a sensor in the pumpkin, where as 4 channel has them in the axles? is it possible that on this 98 this sensor's could be throwing off the tcs.

Note* the harness on top of the rear differential seems to be altered. There are 4 wires coming from the chassis harness, going to to only two wires on the top of the differential cover. any ideas?

This sure sounds like the ABS has been hacked from
a 4-channel system to put the single 3-channel one
(ring gear reluctor) onto one of the two rear ones.
Leaving the other to look like it's not moving at all,
or just faulted.

Good news is, stock F-body rear ends are not highly
valued. Bad news is, why. Might be best to just take
it as a reason to step up to the big iron.

Yep, sounds like somebody put a 3 chn rear in a tcs equiped car. Sounds like your going to need most the pasrts off a 4 chn rear to get it working right. Your better off finding a used rear somewhere for about $200 is the going price, unless you go to a junk yard, they always want an arm and a leg for these rears.

Hey you might be in luck (but i doubt it)
Look closely at your rear end IF you have reluctor rings on each end of the axles and holes on the backing plates where the sensors should be i have the actual sensors and harness for them off my car.
BUT they probably just swapped the whole rear and your fukd.
