Default Anyone have 4.10's that DONT whine???

Is there anyone out there that has a set of Motive brand 4.10's in his or her 10 bolt which do not whine between 50-70mph? I ask because the three cars I have been in which have motive 4.10's all have the same whine between 50-70mph. At first I thought it was an inproper install but now I begin to think it is the brand of gears... if anyone has motive brand 4.10's which are as quiet as the stock 3.42's that came out of your rear prior to the swap I would like to hear it before I invest in a set of AAM's. I have a set of motives, brand new in the box, but now I am aprehensive to use them after hearing the other 3 cars.

Thanks

The Motive brand is supposed to be the quietest ones . . . Richmond the loudest.

In my experience, Strange gears are actually the quietest. Moser, Motive, etc have all been more noisey.

Not probably what you were looking for in a response but I have been running the Richmond 4.10's for the last 3 years. First set lasted one summer but was due to the fact that I set them up and must have had them to tight. I had galling. Replaced them with Richmonds again took a little more time to make sure I had everything correct and I have been very happy with the Richmonds. I really do not have what would be called noticable gear whine in the car. The reason I missed it on the first install was I didn't have the original shim under the pinion bearing to have a starting point.

My stock 3.42 gears whine at 50-70mph.

Have a pro set them up properly, and they'll be as quiet as possible. And don't buy richmonds.

A few other options:

1. Louder exhaust
2. Louder stereo
3. Ear plugs

or a more reasonable one

4. Insulation. But some dynomat or something and line the interior with it. Gets rid of a lot of road noise.

Sumtimes you need to let them kind of break in too. My 3.73s were louder when I first got it back from da shop. Its been over 300miles now I swapped oil cuz I had to replace an axle and now its not that loud. I wonder if different oil plays any role in the noise. I used the Oreilys Limited Slip Lube and it worked better than the valvoline synthetic crap at autozone.

Yeah, my 3.42's whine very quietly. I was thinking of doing 4.10s. How much do they help? I hear the difference is like night and day. How much would it run to do gears, kit, and girdle?

I have AAM's in my car, got them from SLP, and they whine like yours between 50-70. I had them installed at the dealer where I work. I'd be intrested to know too.

I know the dynamics behind hypoid gears allow the teeth of the pinion to slide along the teeth of the ring gear. The hypoid gear was created primaraly for automotive applications years ago when straight gears were once used in rear ends. The way the hypoid meshes creates a pressure, thus the oil has to be pressure rated (GL-5) i dont know what the MIL spec is off hand but its the pressure which emminates a high pitch vibration or "whine" thats why they typicaly whin under acceleration or decel. I know that backlash plays a huge part in the whole set up but the corperate GM 10 blot is a 7-1/2" ring gear, which means a gear cutter has to cut the gears in such a way that 10 teeth on the pinion mash properly with 41 teeth on the ring gear in a small diameter. When gears are cut at a certin pitch for durability it may comprimise noise issues. Such as Richmond, everyone says the whine a lot, I also understand that they are quite durable as thats what we use in our drag cars. Im not sure about all the principals behing hypoid gears, its been a long time since school, there is a lot of information on them and how to quiet them on-line, not always in an automotive application too. All in all I believe that in such a small diameter ring gear once you get up in ratio the louder they become. I was just trying to find out if indeed there are F-body freeks like us out there that do have motives which work nice and quiet before I send them back, im sure someone will chirp in soon.

My Motive 4.10's with a T/A girdle are quieter than my factory 3.42's!!!

It has the very slightest hum when you lightly roll into the throttle in 5/6th gear.

I wouldn't buy any other gear but Motives.

The motive gears I had were in a stock 10 bolt. The 4.10's I have in the 12 bolt are Pro Street gears, which are quite...except between 60-80mph, during that point, they are louder than stock rear with motive 4.10's

I've got a set of OEM GMs in the 10 bolt now (after the Superior ones I had took a serious ****) and while there is a slight whine -which I expected, since almost everyone has said that 4.10s will make a bit more noise than 3.42s - they're pretty quiet. They were installed last week, and I've probably got about 500 miles on them, and no hard launches or even WOT runs. Hopefully the Mac covger I have on will help a bit, until I can decide on what else to throw back there.
