I couldn't help but read these stories after the fact.. Well, First day with the car at the drags, I walked up to a couple ls1's and asked them about the rears, knowing it's the weak link. All these guys had stockers and said they never had problems. First pass, 14.90 up in smoke with at 2.87 sixty, Went through the trap at 105 granny shifting, which I was pretty happy with though. Second pass, warmed up the drag radials, Left at 2500 knowing the rear is only so strong, car squatted real nice, bit real hard, and made it about 4 feet. Ended up snapping the driver's side axle. So ended up saving the Carrier and gears. I obviously couldn't put 3.42's back in, so ordered some richmond 4.10's, superior axles, and one of the really heavy auburn pro series carriers. After reading this thread, kind of wish I saved my money and bought a 9" but too late. I don't plan on racing the camaro, that's what my chevelle's for. Hope this rear will hold up for street driving. I'm obviously not easy on it though.

I never blew up my stock 7.5. Been many 1.8 and 1.9s, on 17" mickeys, at the track with 4.10s and god knows how many street races. It's still ready to go but now sitting in the corner with the girdle cover and motive 4.10s in it.

That puts me a little more at ease. I've heard great things about the girdle covers. Might be worth the hundred dollars to keep what is now a 1000 dollar investment together. Guess it helps reinforce the caps and the case from twisting?

Word to the wise, if you don't have AAA, then if you are at the drag strip and you hear a clunking noise coming from one of the rear tire area, do not try to make another pass lol....
I actually had enough speed at the 1/8 mile to coast the full length of the track to the turn off, BUT I ran a 25.8 and got beat by a grand am....lesson learned: if you hear a noise STOP and you may be able to drive your car home lol

I have a mysterious popping/clunk that's coming from
the back of the car. I've checked all the bolt's that I
can think of for my aftermarket rear lca's, stock panhard
bar, sway bar, end links etc.
I really hope it's not from my 10 bolt. This is the stock 98
auburn 10 bolt filled with Redline synthetic 75W90 GL-5
gear oil. I changed the fluid myself about 1.5 years ago
and everything looked really good (no metal chunks or
visible gear damage.) I'm still running the stock 3.42's.
I also have a Trick Flow diff cover with bearing support
caps and ARP hardware (torqued correctly.) The bottom
of the diff cover is "moist" but not dripping. It's been that
way since I upgraded to the Trick Flow cover as you have
to use red rtv gasket maker on the drain bolts/perimeter of
the cover.
Install University states:
"After having several weeks to check on the cover we have noticed some rear end gear oil on the bottom of the cover. The drain plug seems to leak ever so slightly. We do not find this to be a huge problem. We just want to point this out so you can be ready to see some oil down there. This seems to be a common occurrence with this cover."
So I'm wondering how many of you have a "damp" aftermarket cover? I've never seen any drips in my parking stall so I don't think it's a huge deal.
There is no abnormal noise at any rpm or speed. No clunking. No whining.
Just a pop/clunk sound that I don't remember hearing before over speed
bumps/dips regardless of how slowly I go over them.
Exhaust shop also ruled out the exhaust causing the noise.

You can't do that, it won't physically fit into the 7.5 housing. Bob
