Default Changed my rear end fluid today.....

I have had the car for about 3 months and finally got around to changing the tranny and rear end fluid. I was pretty pissed to see how black and crappy the fluid was and I don't think it has ever been changed. I still had what loked like the factory seal on it and lots of ltitle shavings on the magnet. No damage though from what I could see. I cleaned the **** out of it and the over and threw some Lucas 85w-140 and the additive from GM in there. Already running so much nicer. I guess I shouldn't have assumed that the car was taken great mechanical care of even though it was taken great care appearance wise.

Default changed rear oil what year z28?

My 2002 manual says to use sinthetic 75-90 oil and limited slip additive.
Is it o.k. to use 80-140? I just rebuilt my 2002z28 camaro rear 10 bolt.

^ 80-140 should be alright to use

people don't understand that ALL of the fluids in their car need to be changed at some point.
i just got an 03 Silverado with 118k miles on it, i've already bought the rear diff fluid, just waiting for some time that i can change it out... i bet its going to be black and smell like its burned. also i'd be willing to bet that the trasmission fluid has never been changed either

The service interval on the rear is not that long, but even
the dealership where I used to get maintenance ignored it.

I found much swarf in mine too. Good enough excuse to put
the T-2R, 3.42s, full moving parts / seals and a reinforcing
cover w/ drain plug.

I own a 2001 Z28, and have been using 85W-140, GL-5 (with the GM additive) for over 6 years, with absolutly no negative effects. The heavier oil will disapate the heat from the gears faster, and at most you will loose nominal horsepower due to the thicker oil.

I am old school, so I do not use synthetic oil in my differentials.

T-2R is a higher-bias, beefier Torsen chunk. I got mine from
Strano -->

Full moving parts, I mean bearings, seals, pinion spacer and so
on. If you're tearing it up, why not? Especially if the soup is
chunky style, no telling what's gotten into the bearing races.

Diff cover - I got a MAC, the TA might be better, check the
various broad-line parts sponsors. I think I got mine from New
Era if I recall. Some things about it seemed low quality (rough
casting & tapped holes, mostly) but it's OK, doesn't leak and
has the preload studs.
