They are worth as long as you arent running slicks doing high RPM drops. It does help to strengthen the rear some.

From my personal experience, I'd say they aren't worth the money. This is just my personal experience though. For one thing, the cover itself does not have a magnet like the stock cover, which could collect any shavings you might have in your gear oil and possibly reduce wear. With the aftermarket cover, those shavings will be free to swim in your gear oil until you flush them out or something fails.

I've heard about them being better at dissipating heat from the gear oil, but I don't see how it can be a substantial amount. I mean, yes the cover is made out of aluminum which has a higher thermal conductivity than the stock steel one, but it is also much thicker. I haven't done any tests to prove this, this is just my assumption. They might be more effective if they had an extended surface (fins), but the ones I've seen don't have any...

One thing they do have going for them is the pre-load bolts and studs that come with the cover (if purchased). They have to be torqued to the proper loads though.

I sold my cover after I sheared some spider gears in the carrier, then just slapped my old one on. I haven't had a problem since, but then again I've also learned a few tricks on how to make the stock 10-bolt last a little longer since then. Hope this was what you were looking for.

I had a buddy who put a stud and girdle kit on his SS and a few weeks later he broke the posi unit. He never launches his car, always races from a 30 roll or so. He said they didn't help him at all.

They help alot imho, the rear i'm running now was broken and didn't have a girdle. After a girdle it hasn't broken again YET. That's proof enough for me.

I don't think it's worth it to change gears in the 10 bolt at all, which you probably are if your thinking of buying the stud kit. Once you're in their, ya I'd get the stud kit.

depends on how much it costs you to get it all done. I think I have less than $350 in my entirely rebuilt 10 bolt. Not a bad upgrade for my 2.73 geared car IMHO.
