I HATE mine. I want to hear the engine and the exhaust, not transmission and rear end gears making noise.

Gear whine has nothing to do with being a "real car".... unless you are refering to a straight cut transmission gear box.

A diff shouldnt whine... unless it is a straight cut transaxle, like a Hewland.

I do like a little gear whine. My dad's Olds has the Muncie rock crusher and that thing screams. It's a little much for me, but I'm still a fan.

There is a big difference between a low helix trans making noise (that is part of its nature) versus a hypoid differential making noise. A rear should never make noise. The noise is generated by friction either in the gears, bearings, etc. If it were set up properly it would be quiet and more efficient. Aside from all the 7.5's that start out quiet and then are tweaked out of whack.

Straight gears > whine.

on a daily driver like my camaro no I don't like it. A toy or race car it's almost a need.

Thats fine whne you are talking about pro shifted race transmissions. Most of the gear whine talk around here involves rear diffs, and none of those are straight cut or even low-helix. Next to none of the rears here should whine unless they are using pro gears which most dont need and wouldnt last long on the street.
As far as straight cut > gear whine it should be straight cut = gear whine. And even what most consider to be straight cut gears are actually just really low helix, like a M22HD. Most older cars had truley straight cut reverse gears which is why the sounded liek sewing machines in reverse, I wouldnt exactly call that a whine.

Why do you think they put 500 watt sound systems in F-bodies?

I remember my brother told me that they used to make three different gear drives for older cars. They were distinguished by Loud, moderate, and minimal whine.
