Help me decide, 12 bolt, 9", or Dana 60
Well, in a few months I'll be getting a new rear end for the turbo coming months later. But I'm stuck on which rear end to choose from. I don't goto the track much or will I run anything better than a street tire 90% of the time as my car is a daily driver in the summer, rain or shine. I don't race a lot, but I do plan on making 500-550rwhp on a Mustang dyno. Then after this engine blows I know I will build something around 850rwhp on a Mustang dyno, so I would rather do this once.
12 Bolt Pros:
-Keeps ABS. Important to me because I have a three channel car and it's my DD. Plus I don't like things on my car that are supposed to work, but don't.
-Stock 3.42 gear ratios. I DO NOT want anything higher. I do 90% highway driving, plus I wouldn't have to worry about reprograming the computer to any different gears.
12 bolt cons:
-"Weak", I've heard from people that have 12 second car breaking 12 bolts, to 10 second cars having no problems.
-They whine after a few hard launches. I hate noisey rearends. My stock 10 bolts whines a little bit now, and I hate it.
9" Pros:
-Strong.
-No whines.
9"Cons:
-No ABS
-Have to worry about fixing the speedo to read correctly
-Lowest gear is 3.55s. Not really worried about that, but the reprogram speedo thing.
Dana 60 Pros:
-Strong
-Inconclusive info on if these make any noise.
Dana 60 Cons:
-Same as 9" cons
So, can someone help point me in the right direction? I'm not worried about which one is heavier, or more efficient because all the threads I've read say its a tossup. I'm leaning towards the 12 bolt though. I'm also thinking about lowering my car an inch, better sway bars, and running true duals over the axle in the future.

I would go with the 9 inch, because it is an M6 and it looks like you plan on making some serious power...so it'll probably work out better for you in the long run. As far as ABS, you can delete it with the SJM manufacturing kit.
Reprogramming the gear in these cars is a cinch - don't let that worry you. It takes about 2 minutes with hptuners/efi live.

Just a comment or two on this subject, towards some assumptions by others that are completely inconclusive if the differential is set-up correctly. I dont really agree with:
12Bolt:
Its weak in a 12 second car ??
That sounds like driver error, finess and set-up issues to me.
It whines after a couple of launches ??
That sounds like someone didnt drive the pinion races in all the way during assembly... another set-up related issue.
If this is all you have to worry about in consideration to using a 12bolt... then dont use the products from the companies associated to these issues to begin with. If you are serious about purchasing a quality product, especially a 12 bolt... shop around. There are much better companies that do 12 bolts, better than Moser and Strange. Take a look at Mark Williams...
9Inch:
There are three channel systems available for the 9"... but none that work 100% for, the four channel.
As Kell stated... the speedo issue is nothing to worry about. Its a fairly easy and cheap fix.
There are more ratios available than that. Here is a short list (*=available from various manufacturers):
2.80
2.86
2.91*

Naw Kelly... it was a generalized statement. 12 bolts are not weak by any means unless its in a 3800+ lb chassis and youre launching 10.5 slicks on a side step, being driven every weekend by a 25 year old. I have a 40 year old 12bolt that has been beaten the hell out of for years, by yours truly, at that same power level... and I never had issues, even with a 30 spline axle and the 40 year old Eaton it still has in it.
_JB_, what you have read on this site should be considered an exception. I have never heard so much bitching and whining about differential related matters than I have heard here. Not in my 18+ years of differential building have I ever heard so much complaining.... until I noticed some common factors.
Moser and Strange.
As I stated before, if you are looking for a differential without having to deal with all of the 'stories' that you have heard on this site... shop around. In related matters, there are people that can build 12bolts to withstand 750+rwhp, doing a sidestep launch on 10.5" slicks... all while being as quiet as a daily driver needs to be. Private mass production "crate" differentials are a 50/50. You will either get something that works great and will last... or... you wont. Do you really feel like tossing the coin into something like this by getting something from the lowest bidder ??
Like I said... shop around. If you need some other direction, PM me.

id go with the 9inch. if u need to switch gears later or want different ratios all the time u can so much easyer. get 2 carriers and have 2 different gears so when i go to the 1/4 u can have good times with a 4.11 then when u go to a road track u can switch to a higher gear 3.73 or stock even so u have the mph around the track. and the 9inch is plenty strong.

I just got my car back from getting a strange 60 on and I love it! People complain about whine but really its very soft and not an issue at all. It feels alot tougher and definatly transforms the way the whole car feels. My 10 bolt that I broke had 3.42's in it and I put 3.73's in this one and can't believe the difference! I highly recomend it to anyone daily driver or not.(Its my dd)

I voted 9 inch with my money because that's what I just bought. It's tried and true, it's very easy to work on, the aftermarket support for it is second to none, and it's damn damn strong. It's heavier than a 12 bolt but lighter than a dana and you can cut those numbers 20lbs with an aluminum 3rd member housing. As I understand it, you cannot keep the ABS if your car is a 3 channel with a 9 inch but if you have 4 channel, it's no problem. I have a 4 channel car and will be keeping the ABS.
I bought mine from Scott at driveline-solutions.com. He is very knowledgeable about them all. He builds the 3rd members in house vs just shipping plant assembled 3rd members out like others. Not saying plant built rears are bad, but I like the attention to detail he puts into them.

You can't go wrong with a 9" or the Dana S 60. I too was having trouble deciding what rear to go with until contacted Scott@Driveline-Solutions. Top notch customer service and one HELL of a price also. Give him a call and see what he say....

I can speak for a 9", seeing as how its what I have. I've got a measly 31 spline, and its held up JUST fine . And yeah, somebody already said it, but there are quite a few more ring and pinions offered below 3.55's...

9" or S60 and never have to worry about a rearend again. Plus your a 6spd so anything lower then a 3.55 gear would be stupid remember you have a 6spd!! I had 4.10s with bolt ons and that made the car so much more fun to drive, no to mention my mpg didn't ove and cruised at 75-80 on the hwy.
