Question Clacking sound from rearend?

Hey all! New to the site, love it!

I have a 2002 TA WS-6. When I am hard on the throttle, I have a clacking sound in the rear. I'm thinking U-joint. As it only happens when I'm hard on it and it sounds just like a bad CV joint in a front wheel drive car.

Does this make sense to you all???

Thanks in advance!

Eric

I think the u-joint would be a good place to start...can't think of anything else that would be binding up under load like that.

If it is the stock driveshaft, beware that the u-joint is a BITCH to get out. It is held in by injected nylon...you'll need to get a torch so you can melt that **** until it is all out. Then you can get the joint out...just a heads up.

GREAT info!!!!! I think it is stock. So what about the replacement joint? Is it held in in a similar manner? Or, is it like a normal joint? And any suggestions on what brand to replace it with?

The aftermarket joints are held in like a normal joint with clips...as for a brand? No idea...just get one from your local NAPA dealer.

Does it only happen at low rpm or does it do it when you are hard on the throttle too? And how about when you are turning and accelerating?

Ok, so it's not the spider gears in the rear end.

Dumb question, it only happens when you are moving, right? In other words, it's not engine related like pinging or knocking? Definately drive train and it's in first through fourth gears? Does it clear up at higher RPM's in any given gear, or is it constant through the aformentioned gears? And it's not in fifth or sixth? Are you sure you just can't hear it due to road/wind noise?

trying to help........

actually i think it does clear up at a higher rpm, mostly low rpms, really loud when starting off in 1st gear like over a speed bump

I was talking with a local performance shop and they said it's the factory posi. They claim to have seen this "a thousand times". Any thoughts on how accurate this sounds?

in torsens the paddle will rattle on the cross pin as the carrier rotates. Usually heard al low speads comming to a stop. To simulate this sound you can pull the differential cover off and move the paddle around and that should be your noise.

My guess? You have a tooth missing off your ring gear. It won't hurt to pull the rear cover off and inspect what you have going on in there. Mine made the same noise after getting on it at the track. Bad news.

Default Clacking Noise from Rear End

I am having the same problem. I was in a burnout competition and the next day my car is making a clacking noise only when I hit the gas. The noise occurs even when I am not accelerating hard. It is a repetitive thump, thump and about a second between occurrences. It actually sounds like it is coming from the driveshaft, although I believe that the noise is just transmitting from the rear end. The last time I service my rear end was about 500 miles ago. I found alot of metal shavings and a piece of a tooth from the ring gear, but the car ran great and I didn’t notice anything until now. Anyone have any suggestions other than immediately changing the rear end?
